to answer the question, he added a bunch.

would they have been famous without him? i don't know and neither do any of us, but they would have been a different band.

Well, would VH have been just as famous without Mike? Yes. Would the vocal sounds been the same? No. Would it have been just as good of a vocal sound, if different? Most likely. The 2 main ingredients of VH's sound have always been Eddie's guitar and the lead singer, whether it be Roth, Sammy, or Gary for that matter. Al's drumming, to me, does have a sig style, too.....it is a collective thing. However, it's been the writing/playing of EVH and the singing of the said singers that have been the main hallmark of VH...not the only ones, nut the ones that people, even casual fans, recognize.

And yes, i would never argue the fact that Mike has been a great part of VH's sound vocally. His playing was mostly subdued...and i believe by choice, as he's said...so that Ed had room to do his thing.

His background vocals were important but not vital and is a pretty good bassist, but yes they would have have been successful without him. Ed, Al, and Dave/Sammy were may more important to the band's overall music and sound.
Wolfie is not Mike, but he's more than ok.
Mike is gone, but not forgotten. They played some amazing shows from 2007-2015; some people are in denial about it.

Yet another "Discuss the validity of Mike Anthony" thread. The only thing more predictable than the responses offered in it will be the amount of time before it gets locked up.

This is a constructive discussion, no need for handcuffs just yet.

I would love to have someone expand on "great stage persona", ideally without them using the phrase "class act" as the primary descriptor. Not because I don't think it's a valid point, just sheer curiosity about what people think this is and why it is so important.

Here is an interesting point that hasn't been done and done over time and time again, unlike most of this debate: Would the band have functioned without Mike to take the fall? When Eddie/Alex fell out with Dave in the early 80s, they hated on Mike for sticking up for Dave (which sounds nuts, but that's what they claim), but maybe it kept Dave in the band longer? Shared blame = less blame.

Later on, Mike gave Sam a buddy he could spend time with. If he'd spent even more time with Eddie than he was already, it could have accelerated their personality clash.
