    Default EVH Star Guitar Makeover

Well, call me crazy, but I've decided to re-do my star guitar.

After several years, I noticed the paint I used the first time (Krylon) began to wrinkle and look like poo. It took several years, but it happened.
That just goes to show the unpredictable characteristics of Krylon paint.

The good thing is, I learned alot from that paintjob which made my second attempt even better IMO. Not only did I use a 2k urethane paint this time around, but I executed some things I've learned like clearcoating the white basecoat before masking and cutting the graphics. The clearcoat helps prevent any blemishes caused by masking and cutting out the graphics and provides a nice clean look. I have no doubt that this paintjob will look good for a very long time.

I'm going to try to clearcoat it later on this evening.

Hopefully I'll be able to post some completed pics soon.

That's whats so great about what we do.
Think of how many guitars we "screwed up" to get where we are now.
I remember one time, many moons ago, that I must have had 5 or 6 guitars hanging up, curing, covered with Krylon.
I remember Dino asking, "Lemme get this strait. You have how many hanging up?"
    I'll never forget it.
I was a busy guy for a while after that mishap.

Dang, I thought I was the king of crappy Krylon paintjobs, but I've never had krylon turn on me like that!

Did you have some sort of undercoat of paint or oil finish on the wood before you painted? Now I'm worried about all my somewhat decent looking krylon guitars....

Oh well, it looks even more fantastic now than it did before when the krylon was new!

Krylon really only works "okay" if you're doing a relic paintjob ...
If you want a "factory finish", you're not going to get it without using clearcoat. That's when you run into problems.

The Star guitar didn't show signs for a few years, but it happened.
No, I didn;t use any sort of oil based finish on the wood prior to painting.
I used Minwax sanding sealer, Krylon primer, Krylon Paints, and Krylon Clearcoat. All the same brand and type as not to risk any chemical reaction.

You wouldn't believe the time it took to replicate all the graphics on this guitar. That's really why it was so heartbreaking to see the finish just start to crumble. But, I figured there was alot of work put into the guitar and that it was worthy of doing over.

    Here's another Krylon catastrophe ...
I let this paintjob cure of almost A YEAR before wetsanding and buffing. It looked beautiful when it was done, but withing a few short months it looked like this ...

It's very unpredictable ... it could happen within months or it could happen within years, but IT WILL HAPPEN if you try to create a factory finish with Krylon paint.

Holy crap Dino! That's horrible. Especially compared to your urethane (or whatever you usually use) guitars.

I don't really use krylon, but early on I used it.... I've got an almost 4 year old guitar with a ton of krylon on it... it still isn't dry... but like I said, it hasn't done that crazy wrinkle thing yet.

I hope yours lasts but I have to say, if it's still soft after 4 years, I think the worst is yet to come. I hope not though.

Man. You did a masterful job on that and now going to redo it all? I guess you don't want to sell it as is and then do another one? It's a shame it's all for nothing. Well if there were any little things about the design that you feel you could have gotten better I guess now is your chance.

That krylon look is wild. You know if you painted a guitar with like a leather or snakeskin texture that krylon defect would actually look cool.

Forgive my ignorance, I'm a paintjob novice.
What was the problem with having that many guitars curing?

    Don't read this.

Oh, I'm sure you're right. Luckily, that guitar is kinda a relic to me anyway, so if the paint eats itself, so be it!

They could answer better but..Krylon paint takes a long time to cure/dry. It stays soft and picks up imprints, from like clothing and can do all types of funky things. It's not recommended for use of guitars at least ones with a factory finish. B4 Ron knew how bad the paint was he had a bunch of guitars done up with it ages ago. Live and learn.
