    Default Don't shoot me!!!!! :)

Okay, lately I've been listening to a lot of Huey Lewis (Jeff now ducks for cover, as the guys in the forums start throwing tomatoes).

Is it me, or is Chris Hayes a very underrated guitarist?

Anyone know what he used as far as equipment goes (amps, etc). I believe he was mostly a strat guy, but I've also seen him with a Les Paul.

    Thoughts?

Dude, I've been talking about Chris Hayes on here for years man. He's amazing! When I was 2 or 3 years old, I'd sit in front of the TV with my plastic guitar watching Van Halen and Huey Lewis and the News videos. I wanted to be EVH and Chris Hayes. Definitely my 2 biggest guitar influences!

Glad to hear I'm not the only one! I think Hayes is amazing. Wish he had received more credit than he got.

I never knew what kind of amps he used. I thought he used Fender amps for a while. Not sure though.

I never cared too much for his tone, and he made the ugliest faces.

But, they have great songs, and I'm sure it's a great gig for him. He definitely put his mark on them.

Two years ago when I went to a Huey concert I hit the guitar player in the head with a beach ball during one of his solos. He didn't miss a note. Huey and the News rock.

I remember back in the day on MTV I think they played a live concert of theirs. I'm not much of a fan of the band but they were big at the time and I saw it. He really stood out as a great player back then. One thing I remember is he played some Hendrix riffs here and there. I'm not surprised people would consider him great and like the music. No reason to duck for cover lol

Recently a well known musician friend of mine from the Twin Cities area posted something brief to his Facebook page about how there really are no guilty pleasures when it comes to music. You like what you like for whatever reason you like it, and your own reason is good enough.

Even having said that, dude, Huey Lewis and the News were/are a great band. I've always admired their crafty pop songwriting and performances. I recall having to write out a few of their songs for a gig years ago and quite enjoying digging into the guitarist's parts.

While I never cared for their music, I will give them their due as a great band. They even held their own during part of the era where Aquanet reigned supreme. And unlike most of the bands from that era, Huey still gets airtime. And after all- it's not like I have several gold and platinum records to my credit. Maybe that was the sound I should have gone after...

Funny to see this thread. To say Chris Hayes is underrated is even an understatement. It's almost like he's invisible. I never, ever hear his name thrown around despite how damn good he is. Great to see a thread about him.

I actually saw these guys 5 times between '87-'96. What surprised me the most was the edge they played with at their live shows. So many of the songs were much heavier and had way more balls than what you hear on the albums. Just a great band.

Underrated?....hell yeah! I always liked him too. As far as 80's tone goes, I think he stood out among his genre. Power Of Love (from Back to the Future) had a great Strat tone and nice lines. You're right about him playing a Paul too. There used to be ads in Guitar Player featuring him playing a Paul fitted with Kahler tremolo system.
She looks so $#@!'n good ,so sexy and so frail....Somethin's got the bite on me, I'm goin' straight to Hell.

The guitarist in my band plays the same guitar he has. Gibson with a Kahler. Looks a bit like a Paul but double cutaway. Don't know what the name of it is.

He was underrated as a guitarist.

Huey Lewis and the News are awesome. Plain and simple. They were a perfect blend of 50s/60s doowop and rock with modern 80s vibe. Great band with a very very underrated guitarist and part of that was the humility of the band members. I've seen on many interviews where Huey and Chris go out of their way to talk about how they weren't the greatest band, they weren't the greatest players, that Huey wasn't the greatest singer...that they were just boys from the neighbourhood.

Whatever, those guys were incredible and Huey himself is as awesome a singer as you're going to find.

Great band and yeah, among the best examples of great guitar tone you're going to find.
    Stay out of it, dude.
