    Default My latest Frank

This one's coming along nicely so I thought I'd share. No relicing yet (pics are as-painted red) on the final finishing, just what was done prior to shooting red.

It'll target the original the best I can in its last photo'd shape (~97 or so). The hunt is on for square pattern reflectors and Gotoh crown head tuners.

    cheers and Happy 4th!

    Nice Franky!

Have any of you replica builders out there been able to find the square pattern oblong reflectors? I don't think even the $25,000 Fender made replica has the correct reflectors...

Ya know, I'm around antique fire trucks a lot, and I know I have seen the square pattern reflectors on some of the 1940's-1970's trucks. I even vaguely remember some of the older guys talking about trying to get replacements for their trucks, but they were having trouble finding them...

If I locate a stash of them I'll let you guys know.

Question - any ideas on how to add length to the legs of the new EVH pup? the legs are considerably shorter than the SD Custom 78. This pup sits probably close to .25 from the strings. I hate to shim it.
Ideas? Anyone else experience this? I'm using Kyle's Frank body for this build and i think the route depth is standard.
    Cheers

Take some scrap metal from an old computer case or power supply. It looks kinda think, but it is very soft and bendable. Just use tin snips or electrical cutters to cut rectangles the size of the bottom of the pickup legs to shim it. Drill a hole in the 2 pieces for the screws and no one will ever see it. You should be able to add a little less than 1/16" with every little shim you layer.

I always used tounge depressers if I need to shim up a pup.
My thought is use as much wood as possible.
But Im sure a metal shim would work also.

Look at this - it's not even close! How could you call this a replica to what Fender used??

I put the signed one in another project and it was perfect, albeit a KNE body. This is Divebomb but I think the route depth is similar certainly not 3/8" deeper...

So aside from that issue, things are coming along. Still lots of detail work to do. My wife sat there and compared to the 97 shot and for the first time realized, wow, this is a lot of work. she was quick to point out what was off but also occasionally said, wow, that's right on.
moral - 3rd time wasn't the charm, 4th is closer but I think you (and my wife even said this) could do this 10 times and not be exactly precise with every detail.
Overall, I'm pleased with the overall appearance. It's got the right look to it. I made some dumb taping mistakes, particularly on black of all things being that there aren't that many...but if black's off, you find yourself scrambling to fudge one thing or another.
Anyway, take a look and let me know what you think.
    General list of TTD:
    omit white under bridge
continue white stripe on right horn up to top
break strap lock screws in left horn
    add guts to routes
    shim pup
    add reflectors
    add black input wire tape
    add pick tape
add scratches to arm cutaway area

Does that pickup have short legs? They should be 1/2" and you should have to bend them out to get it to the correct height.
