    Default Al's Backing Vocals

Since it is slow around here, I thought I would pose a general question:

    1. On MTV's VH Rockumentary, Mike made the comment that when he joined ther bad, Al sang background along with Eddie.

    2. On the inside art of FUCK, there is a group photo of all of them singing - could be just a picture and not evidence that Al actually sings on the album.

    3. I once saw a snapshot from the 5150 days where it looked like Al was wearing a headset mic.

My questions: 1) does anyone know if Al's vocals are on any VH record (which songs?) and 2) Has anyone witnessed him sing background at a show (be aware, my first VH live show was 1992)? - he might have sung Happy Trails at the end of some shows, but I am interested about other songs, as well.

    Thanks for the input.

All I can find in my immediate collection is that FUCK is the only album that has them all credited with backing vocals.

Balance on the other hand only has Sam, Ed and Mike credited with backing vox.

The DLR-era CD's I have however only credit Dave with vox of any kind. The rest just says "Guitar, Bass, Drums".

Of all the Halen shows I've seen (video or in person) I've never seen Al sing.

I can hear Alex's voice on "Not Enough." Other than that, I dont hear it on any other songs.

If Al was recorded in the studio, I cant imagine that they would use a headphone mic (ie singing whilst playing). He would be recorded separately using hi end vocal mics in a vox booth.

He's probably on some of the "gang" type backing vocals. There's a few on FUCK, "In 'N Out" and "Runaround" come to mind.

I can promise you that nobody's vocals were recorded live in the drum room with drums being tracked.

The only other song I can think of is "Could This Be Magic?". Besides Mike and the female background singer, I thought I heard Al but could be mistaken.

For sure on Happy Trails. You can clearly hear all 4 of them, and they used to do it live together at the end of the show from like 82-84. It might be Al on Humans Being too, I think I hear him on that.

There's definitely a voice in the chorus of "Finish What Ya Started" on the word "started" that isn't Sammy or Mike. Back then, I always thought it sounded like Alex. But after hearing Ed talk more in the last fifteen years or so and how he has such a gravel-throated yowl when he sings backing vocals I now think it might be him. Who knows? You'll never find out the truth from the brothers, that's for sure.

It was Nicolette Larson. She sang back-up on "Could This Be Magic?" after Ted Templeman had EVH play lead on one of the tracks of her album Nicolette, which Templeman also produced.

yeah, evh sings a cool harmony on the "if i fall shy at all" part. i never noticed it that much but when you listen on headphones you can hear it pretty clearly and it sounds sweet.
Any musicians near Boston / Cape Cod want to get together and play some VH? I play drums, guitar, keyboard, bass, and I sing. I want to start a VH tribute band. Contact me if interested.

A rare "feature" EVH backing vocal part.

Al was credited with background vocals for everything up until Balance. From there on out, it seems, he stopped contributing to the b-vox in the studio. Steve Lukather helped out with background vocals on "Top Of The World" and "Not Enough," and later on with "Up For Breakfast" as well (I don't think Ed did any b-vox on the three BOBW songs--is that right?). Lukather keeps a detailed list of all his studio work on his website; if someone has the patience, you can dig through it and see exactly what VH he contributed to.
