    Opinions

A friend of mine at work has a Custom Shop Strat that he really never plays, it's very nice. It's red, maple neck, single coils, and of course a standard trem. Like a lot of us, I am a total humbucker/Floyd guy, but I've always wanted a nice Strat. He'll sell it to me for $1,100, which if you know how much those guitars are is a great price. It's in perfect shape, set up, plays great. It has gold hardware that I hate, but I can change that. It was actually built for the guy who is the VP of Guitar Center, who is a close friend of my work friend.

Would you guys do it? If I do it, and I know these single coils won't be beefy enough for me, is there a good pickup out there I can switch to so I can get a bigger tone for distortion? Hot rails? Any advice.

    Thanks boys.

If you don't like it as is, chances are that you never will. You can add shit to more shit but all you still have is shit. Metaphorically speaking.

Yeah I can tell these single coils will never do it for me. But it is a really nice guitar. And not having a Floyd, not sure how much I'll hate that.

I'd go for it and replace the bridge pup with a lil 59 single coil humbucker and no mods needed....will sound killer. Change the tuners to locking and you wont need a floyd...

Well it's a Strat, I don't expect it to have a Floyd, I know some do. But the Custom Shops are a little different. Frankly if I wasn't worried about knocking it out of tune so much it wouldn't be a big deal.

Look at it this way, add up how much it would cost to put new pickups, hardware, and a floyd to the $1100 bucks and is it still a good deal???

Oh I won't add a Floyd to it. It's not like I have to have a Floyd, that part isn't so big of a deal to me. This isn't going to be my main player or anything.

The pickups near as I can tell are $25, the locking tuners are $50...so not major dough. I mean it's a $3k guitar. So yeah, even at $2k it would be a good deal.

I snapped a quick picture of it with my phone, I mean it's a Strat. You see one, you've seen them all, but it does have a really beautiful neck that is hard to see in the crappy pic. Like I said, I don't have a nice Strat, I've always kinda wanted one.

I have always wanted one for some reason, to play some blues or whatever, great lookin guitars... then everytime I go to the store and play one, top of the line model and all, I just dont like em. to me it always feels like a 1200 dollar guitar that plays like a 500 dollar guitar... maybe just bad luck on my part as to which ones I pick up and play.

Well...there's a couple different ways to look at this.

1100 bucks is an absolute steal for a guitar like the one you've described. There's Fender custom shop and then there's Fender Custom Shop. The former practically has a factory line these days but if this was one that was built for a specific individual, you're getting some pretty choice stuff...not just in parts but in care and attention during the building process. I have a lot of respect for the guys that work at the fender custom shop. You could buy it and enjoy it for what it is. It's another tool in your belt, leave it as is.

You could also look at it like you're paying 1100 bucks for a high end project guitar. Swap out the gold for the chrome and throw in some hot rails or some active pick ups and make thing "your's." Nothing inherently wrong with it. It just depends on how you approach the idea of modding guitars and whether their inherent or intended identity is important to you. For some guys, that's paramount...for other's there is no such romance.

For me personally, it would be a no brainer, assuming I had the cash. I hate gold hardware but I jizz over Fender, I could care less about floyds and humbuckers and to have a guitar like that would be pretty awesome.

If you have no qualms about altering it, and it appears you don't, there are a lot of ways you could go. Hotrails are one...and there are some active pick up options you could go with. If you want, I'll be more than happy to make a phone call and get some professional suggestions for you.

I don't subscribe to the idea that if you don't like it now, you won't like it ever. If you like the neck, if you think it's weighted well for you and you like the overall feel and vibe of the guitar, then you're just a pickup and swap of hardware away from having the perfect guitar.
    Stay out of it, dude.

It's a more $ but I like these SD pickups. The locking tuners would help a bunch with tuning too.

The way you're talking, Brettt, I think you've got a crush on this guitar and you should buy it.
My advice would be to let that Strat be a Strat and not try to beef if up. You'll probably be really happy to have a nice pure Strat sound in your arsenal. Straight into the amp with a litttle reverb and--zap! No way to imitate that pure Strattiness.

    ("strattiness?"....whatever.)

    Buy it.

    Don't read this.

Thanks Broken, I am definitely not the kinda guy that thinks it's a bad thing to have to swap shit out to make it mine, I do it to all my guitars. I would get rid of that white pickguard too as well as the hardware shit. In fact I'd probably do that first when I change the bridge pickup. So that doesn't bother me at all.

I guess I'll try it out at practice Sunday and see if it plays well and just needs a few things changed to make it mine. The price is right for sure.
