    Walter Cronkite has passed away.

The family of Walter Cronkite has issued a statement saying the longtime U.S. TV news anchor "is very ill and is not expected to recuperate."

The statement was issued in response to recent news accounts on the health of Cronkite, 92, who became known as "the most trusted man in America" during his long tenure as anchor of "The CBS Evening News," E! Online reported Saturday.

"In order to dispel false rumors, Walter Cronkite's family want it known that, sadly, he is very ill and is not expected to recuperate; he is resting at home surrounded by family, friends and a wonderful medical team," the statement said. "We thank everyone for their prayers and good wishes."

Cronkite suffers from cerebrovascular disease, which affects vessels that supply blood to the brain.

A native of Missouri, Cronkite rose from World War II correspondent for United Press to become the CBS News anchor for 18 years.

During his tenure, he led the newscast to first place in the Nielsen ratings.

Cronkite's nightly signoff -- "And that's the way it is" -- became part of the popular lexicon.
"Watch what people are cynical about, and one can often discover what they lack. -- Gen. George S. Patton

Man, when this guy goes it will be the end of an era. Growing up in South Florida, it was a ritual in our household to watch the Ralph Renick Report followed immediately by CBS News with Walter Cronkite.

Either Walter or the Huntley/Brinkley Report, depending on the news from Vietnam. I've still got the Cronkite narrated 45 of Mercury space recordings that came with the GI Joe Space Capsule.

As with most households in that time period, Dad controlled which news was on in the house, and it seemed he connected better with Renick and Cronkite better than the other anchors of the period. Heck, I'd almost bet my last dollar that Renick has to hold some sort of record for being the news anchor at a single station for that many years.

I've got nothing quite that cool, but I do have a 45 of Cronkite on the first man on the moon.

I remember Ralph. In my house though it was usually Ann Bishop and Glenn Rinkler.

I have to agree with this... Cronkite will be sorely missed.... Dick Clark and Patrick Swasey are next.....

Modern media could stand to learn a thing or two from Mr. Cronkite.

This was very disappointing news to read.

    damn shame.

As I said earlier...I firmly believe he should get a national day of mourning and get every honour the nation can bestow upon him. The guy is part of the fabric of this nation, part of what binds us together as citizens of the larger society and part of the culture and history that all people in the US share.

He should lay in state in the rotunda in DC if his family wishes and allows it. I dont think the US can go too far with honouring him.
    Stay out of it, dude.

CBS is reporting it as well

such a sad day... Mr Cronkite, you have kept us informed and comforted us during our nations darkest days and celbrated and honored our most courageous moments and victories.
