    London Show Reviews !

    Wow, wow, wow, wow !

What a GREAT show ! The 'Foot were on fire and clearly having a great time. Show was opened by 'Skin' who I remember from quite a few years ago. Nice little acoustic set of around half an hour and they were great; i'll be buying an album today as I have it on tape from years ago ! The dude singing has a hell of a voice, welcome back guys, be nice to see you 'plug in' next time.

On to the show - usual set-list, opened with Avenida Revolucion, into Soap on a Rope and off we go. Sammy and Mike sampling the 'local' beers which were actually far from local ! Chad Smith is nuts !! Absolutely fuckin' nuts ! At one point he stood up on his drum stool and then slipped and stacked it into his kit ! One cut arm later and Sammy pouring water over him to wash away the blood. Drum sticks into the crowd almost every song.

Satch - wow. I'll be practising a little harder tonight. Just so damn good and it all gels together so well. Fingers flying all over the neck and as Sammy said 'he's not off this planet !'.

Great to see the JD bass with Mike and he was playing his ass off too. And Sammy, well, what can you say ? How the hell he managed to sing like that all night is just incredible. Hit every single note and didn't shy away from any of 'em. Clearly loved the whole thing and looks as happy as larry to be up there with those guys.

Saw Ian Paice there - clearly enjoying their rendition of 'Highway Star' with Sammy singing directly to him. Also saw Sam's wife and kids (hope they didn't mind daddy's potty mouth !) and man, she still looks hot as hell ! Would love to know who the girls behind her were ! ;0)

At the end of the show it all went a bit mental - Sam, Satch and Mike are at the front, arms up, taking in the applause, whilst Chad's kicking his kit to pieces to get there. He picks up a drum and throws it out of the way except he throws it a little too hard and far and it slams into Sammy's head. One of those 'uh oh' moments. Sam's like 'what the fuck ?!?!?' and then realises what's happened. Shades on the floor and a big red scratch on his face but he took it well, hugged Chad and carried on lapping up the well deserved applause.

A top night - if there's any tickets spare for any shows, get your ass there NOW. Well worth it; can't wait to see 'em again next time. Brilliant !

Default The 'Foot trash London(Chad Smith does anyway!)

Absolutely loved the gig last night, musicianship of the highest order naturally, just got home this morning off the sleeper back up to Scotland.Good atmosphere in the Irish boozer next door to the Empire pre-gig.Lots of Van Halen t-shirts kicking about which always pleases me.
Hagar can still chant up there with the best of them even after all the tequila!
Loved the flying snare drum i think Sammy's lucky his head is still attached.Must admit they played a song i'm not familiar with anybody any ideas what it was?I reckon about halfway thru' the set.
Mainland europe GET yourself along to see them and enjoy.
There's a lot of effervescense in the changing room. Simon Stainrod.

Al: I make my living by viciously attacking something
    Mike: ...actually I don't drink.
    Sammy: Are these yours Eddie?

Before anyone reads this and wonders why I posted it here, let me say it's because Satch is referenced in the review and also because it made me wonder about how Satch is playing in a band setting given the actual point of his being referenced in this review in the first place. I'd be curious to hear how Satch is performing in this different context...Do tell, please. Thanks

"DTB kicked off our Jazz Festival last night , it was a great show the
highlight for me was " My Favorite Things " , he also played " Key To
The Highway " and " Anyday " , it really was awesome . This is the write
up from one of our local papers ."

There's never really been a lot of common ground between Southern rock
and jazz -- but after a blistering show at the Winspear Centre last
night, let's just say that Derek Truck owns it.

This is what happens when those teenage guitar virtuosos grow up. The
30-year-old Trucks -- nephew of the Allman Brothers Band's Butch Trucks
and also a member of that great Southern rock band (which had its jazzy
side) -- has developed a soloing style much like a seasoned jazz player,
but completely within the context of his background.

This slide guitar master is not a blue-note, be-bop kind of guy. He's a
rocker through and through, bringing a sophistication to the form that
challenges without getting self-indulgent, that introduces the listener
to brave new sonic worlds, but also hits you on a gut level. It's a
    remarkable thing to hear.

One might say it's a bit of a stretch to feature this guy for the
opening event at the Edmonton International Jazz Festival, but the hall
was packed with musicians, come to worship the designated guitar hero of
the jazz festival for one of its best-attended events.

Just like the good old days!

The crowd was treated to a dizzying array of styles -- rock, blues,
funk, soul, New Orleans ragtime, East Indian mood music, stuff Derek
came up with that doesn't even have a name -- in one righteous groove
after another. Think Robert Randolph plus the Allman Brothers with a
dash of Bela Fleck. Sorry, that's the best I can do. It's hard to pin
    this guy down.

Just call it a party. Trucks and his fabulous band had the crowd rocking
from the first few notes. They opened with a gospel-blues feel called
Sweet Inspiration, segued into the fast shuffle I'll Find My Way. And so
    he did.

Trucks calmly displayed stunning virtuosity on solos, slide and
otherwise, also flying over barrages of crunchy chords with impossible
    speed.

Such fast playing is never enough on its own (Joe Satriani take note),
but this guitarist never brought out the fireworks unless it served the
    songs. That's maturity for you.

On lead vocals was Mike Mattison, a master of restraint, only using his
full-throated blues shout when it mattered.

The hard-working keyboardist Kofi Burnbridge split his time between
funky piano and funky Hammond organ, the perfect accompaniment to
Trucks' guitar work, while the rhythm section -- drummer Yonrico Scott,
bassist Todd Smallie and a percussionist named Count M'Butu --
concentrated on generating the most interesting feels over the strangest
time signatures they could come up with. Their energy seemed to grow
    with every song.

Again, none of this fine playing was ever at the expense of
communicating the emotion of the song.

In short, this was one of the most soulful jazz festival concerts
Edmonton has ever seen. Call it good start to the 2009 jazz festival.

So again, how is Satch's playing live in the Chickenfoot "context?"

Chad's drum clips Sam's melon. That's gonna leave a mark.

    Two things.

That was a custom made kit.

Chads two floor toms are 16 x 16 and 18 x 16. That could have been real bad.

Wow! That had to hurt. Now I see why the Chillis hired him back in the day. He fit right in with their craziness from day one.

Yeah, and Chad's the one that ended up hurt. Must be Hagar's Karma Wheel.
