    Default Las Vegas Hotels

Looking to take the old lady and myself to Vegas in the summer. Any horror stories, bad hotels or general things anyone can help me with?

I've only been there twice. Once to get married and again for a 10 year anniversary. Both times we stayed at the Luxor which was really nice. You will do a lot of walking though so yes good shoes are important. Don't forget your bathing suit too. The pools are great. Mandalay Bay has a really cool one, but they are all huge and nice with nice "views".
    Have a great time.
I used to jog but the ice cubes kept falling out of my glass.

if it's your first time, i'd recommend staying in the middle of the strip (the heat is insane) and it's a central location. I'm actually heading there the 3rd week of August myself. Got a good deal at Paris (probably my favourite hotel in Vegas)

i think it really depends on what you're going to do when you're there. I know some folks who generally stay off strip. They go to the shows, restaurants and casinos on the strip, but they save money by not staying at the hotels on the strip itself.

If you're going to do a lot of gambling or you want to experience a given hotel, I've found it makes most sense to just stay at the cheapest place, or the one with the best package.

I want to go at some point to see Penn and Teller and I'm not real hung up on which hotel I stay at because everyone visits all the hotels for the spectacle of it all. You don't really have to sleep in a given hotel to be able to enjoy what they have to offer in the way of entertainment.
    Stay out of it, dude.

I'm going to also go to the canyons in the area and mainly for the buffets and gambling. I'm getting good at roullette. I have thought of the Rio and maybe the Palm. I'm looking to eat my body weight in steak at the buffet that week.

if u like Fish - the Rio is a good spot as they have a great seafood buffet.

The best buffets in Vegas are the Bellagio, Paris, Mirage.

The Rio is ok (I've stayed there twice) but is off the strip and is getting a bit beat up. The Palms (also off the strip) is a nicer place - gets alot of people from California.

on your first point...you are absolutely correct.

I was talking to my father about it just the other day and they are literally giving rooms away if you'll fly out there. Hunt around, get with an agent, phone the hotels. There are lots of deals going on. I've heard of a lot of "stay two nights, we'll give you the third" kind of deals going on at places like the Bellagio even.

on your second point...really? Damn...that's dissapointing to hear.

I also want to see the beatles show.
    Stay out of it, dude.

Love (the cirque/beatles at the Mirage) gets good reviews from most. Certainly not the most highly rated Cirque show (that would be O at the Bellagio or KA at MGM) but still a good show.

I stayed at the Rio a couple of years back and all the people we spoke to said the show was not worth the time, never mind the money. The only big show that gets consistently worse reviews would be the Criss Angel mess at the Luxor.

As far as the strip goes:
Hooters hotel has bad bad reviews.
Sahara and Stratosphere suck. I hate that end of the strip.
Excalibur is kinda mid-range I guess, cheap and old but has an actual theme if you're into that. Plus its close to the cool hotels like NY NY and MGM.
NY NY was a nice hotel, a little more $, and I really liked the casino (even though I heard its being changed up!)
MGM is cool, staying there again next month. A little more $. Its big, you need walkin' shoes just for that casino.
Caesars sucks...but I guess the mall is cool for people that have money (which I do not).
I like Planet Hollywood, good location too because you have the big fancy themed hotels really close (Bellagio, Paris).
Paris is cool to see once, the suite was really nice but they jacked up the price while we were there, boo hiss! Its not THAT great.
The Mirage isn't too bad but is older.
Imperial Palace is old and cheap but the area is kind cool, you have that Carnivale next door at Harrah's.

    Shows:
Love is the best show I've ever seen, especially if you like The Beatles. But if you don't (gasp) its still visually impressive and exciting.
I thought "O" was a disappointment personally, I'd rather see Love a third time than see "O" a second time, bleh
Phantom is really cool too, they went all out creating that theater. Plus its in the Venetian and that's interesting to see, a lot of stores too but $$$$$$$$.
Blue Man Group was really fun the first time 7 years ago but I found out last year its exactly the same, booo. But its fun!

I hit Sin City at least three times a year.

    Hotels:

    Mandalay Bay
    Mirage
    Hard Rock
    Whiskey Pete's @ Stateline

Hit the Hard Rock 'Rehab' pool party on Sundays and prepare to be utterly blown away. Hard to get in, reserve a cabana and live it the fuck up. Expensive, but worth it. You will never see a finer selection of the female specimen than at the Hard Rock pool on Sundays during summer. Other hotels like MGM and the Venetian do similar gigs European style/topless, but the Hard Rock gets the choice pickings. We did it once, and my GF never let me go back.

    Gambling:

Table play: Excalibur, Monte Carlo, Treasure Island, Luxor
    Loose slots: Fremont Downtown

    Lifetime memory moments:

    Observation platform @ Stratosphere
    Hoover Dam
    Any Cirque Du Soleil show
The Area 51 turn off 150 miles one way outside of Vegas. (worth the trip if you're into that sorta thing, you ain't gonna see jack shit from where you have to stop, but you can see nuclear test craters and cows that really don't look like cows at all, grasshoppers that are WAY too big, and a whole lotta desolation and nothing and military dudes in jeeps watching to see you don't go past the sign that says 'deadly force will be used if you further proceed).
