    mic suggestions

Hey guys, one of my sons is taking up singing in their "band" and they need to purchase a mic. Sounds simple enough, but I was wondering in your experiences, what would be a better mic for them to use. Thank you! Right now, I am going to hook their rock band mic up to the computer in the basement and see if I can ruin it thru the speakers to use for the moment until I get them a real one....

    Thanks again!

I've always used a Shure SM-58 as my everyday all purpose vocal mic.

Thanks guys, I will probably order an SM-58 here real soon. The kids have been jamming ALL day. Never thought I would say it, but I am glad it is quiet now. They have been working on Crazy train, Smoke on the water, another one bites the dust, and run to the hills all day. I am gonna have to steer them to more different tunes tomorrow lol.

On another note, I think I am going to buy the kids a used Fender G-Dec 15 Amp for $160. Looks like a killer amp, clean too. You can get some $ in this stuff right now, but I told them if they would take it serious, learn AND have fun, it would be a good investment for me. Will keep them out of things they shouldn't be doing....for a while.

    Thanks for the suggestions again!

Are these wireless mice’s or corded, I prefer the sound of a hot corded mice, over wireless ones I have tried. I don’t know squat about them I am just curious. My girls are quit the entertainers and I want to find the best for practice.

They are corded. The input is an XLR.

I was always a fan of the EV PL24 because of the durability. I've seen them dropped grill first from about 6 feet without denting it or screwing up the sound quality. It also had a nice textured finish on the actual mic so it was very easy to grab, kinda like a no slip feel and it also felt comfortable.

I also saw the same guy at the music shop take off the grill and step on it without it denting. He took me over to a mixer, plugged in a SM58, and did a mic test. He unplugged the 58 and plugged in the PL24 and the PL24 was louder, even though he did not change the volume on the mixer.

And my favorite part is that it's $79, making it $20 cheaper than the SM58.

the sm58 is certainly old faithful but there are other mics available in the same price range that may work better for him.

I was amazed at how differently my voice sounded when I did side by side tests.

    Consider these options:

Senheiser E835...same price as the SM58 but I think it has more clarity. Just as sturdy.
    http://www.guitarcenter.com/Sennheis...44-i1126762.gc

EV N/D767...this is what I use. I have a deeper voice and I find this mic to be least muddy of all the mics. It's thirty bucks more than a 58 but I found it to be absolutely worth it. Another great feature of this mic is the fact that it has no handling noise. I was really blown away by how quiet it is when taking it off the clip and putting it back on. Great great mic, hard to get it to clip, hard to get it to feedback.

Audix OM2...I prefer this mic to the SM58 as well. Very crisp, very clear and is also very hard to get it to feedback or clip. Before I was turned on to the EV mic, this was my favourite. It's the same price as the SM58.

So, those are my suggestions. When I was first starting out, I heard the same thing "get an SM58." So I did. I own three of them. But as I got more experience and learned more I came to realize that, believe it or not, there are other mics. The SM58 is my least favourite stage vocal mic...behind the ones that I mentioned...great mic, it's old faithful for a reason and it deserves its status but everyone's voice is different and it's worth spending a few minutes trying the others. You may find the 58 to be the best, but you may find another to be even better.
    Stay out of it, dude.

If nothing else, I have found the Shure mics to be built like tanks. We used very little else when we were doing sound enforcement just for this very fact.

absolutely...don't think I've even heard of someone breaking one. Our old music director had 58s he bought back in the late 70s and we used them in our shows so no one can ever say there's a more sturdy mic...but, I've found the EV and the Audix to have just as high build quality, and again, for my voice and the way I sing, those are better mics.
    Stay out of it, dude.

They do make a cordless version, actually, several depending on what mode of wireless you choose, weather it be UHF, or digital. They use the same capsule and grill though. For the money, you just can't beat 58's or 57's.

This is what our lead singer uses.

I couldn't be happier with it. It's a fantastic mic.

Also check out the EV Wireless here: This one is awesome and if I ever go with a wireless vocal mic, I'll buy this one.

    http://www.guitarcenter.com/Electro-...63-i1166737.gc

I know the overwhelming majority of folks drool over the 58 and yes it's a great mic but I can't continue to stress the importance of checking out other mics. I was one of those "can't be a 58" guys for years and years...then I actually heard other mics, for the same money, and realized that they worked better for my needs. Spend a few minutes and check out other options in the same price point. You may in fact be happiest with the 58 but you may not be.
    Stay out of it, dude.
