Default Would You Support Universal or Public Healthcare In The US

So America is 37th in the world when it comes to healthcare - behind Morroco. That obviously isn't good. Insurance companies and the HMO's wouldn't want this obviously because they wouldn't be able to compete with a public option, which would be good because they can go fuck themselves.

Why can't America do what every other western democracy does - which is give it's people free or affordable healthcare? Other countries also have a private and public healthcare plans and those countries are not rolling back on the public plans. They can work well together.

The US could easily have a free or affordable healthcare plan - the ones who are fighting against it are the soul sucking insurance companies who would obviously take a huge hit. So instead they try to demonize it as being a step to socialism, which is so out of touch with reality.

I realize that this is probably a losing argument on this board - as many of you seem to be "hard core" Americans who quite frankly don't like change. But I suspect if you were born in some other country that had public healthcare - you would probably appreciate it as they do.

Am I the only person here who thinks that America is like some company refusing to get computers, because paper and pens work just fine?

Oh no, while I obviously agree being in a country that has free healthcare, I'm getting the popcorn for this one.

if implemented in a manner that was logical then absolutely I would support it.

Brokenland would have universal health care. It's one of my founding pillar principles.
    Stay out of it, dude.

    Yes.

Simply remove the words "over 65" from the Medicare provision.

    Easy as that.

Statistics available if anyone wants to argue.

politically incorrect, but what the hell.....we already have it for the poor and the elderly......one class that doesn't contribute to the economy and one class that has contributed, but no longer does.

in another respect we have "unofficial public health care"...that being the uninsured who use the health care system (and are usually sicker when they do so due to no preventative care) and then just run out on the bill, thus sticking the insured with higher costs to cover the losses.

why shouldn't it also be available for the working stiff or the self employed?

as long as it's not a mandatory system, and you can opt for private coverage and tax incentives to provide for your self or for your employees, I would support it.

I'm not very knowledgable on this, but I don't see how it could hurt. Other countries-like Canda, England, and France-have a great system set up. Why can't we?

Pass me some popcorn.... It won't be long before someone throws out the story about how the Canadian system doesn't work because they know someone who crossed the border to get an MRI because the wait in Canada was too long. This is the big story that gets fed to everyone in the U.S. to try to keep them from seeing the true benefits so a public system.

All I know is that I am 39 years old and have never paid a penny for any form of health care and that includes kneed surgery, the birth of my son (and #2 is on the way) trips to the emergency room with broken ribs, an ultra sound to check out the lump on my testicle (all was well but I still rub it a lot to see if it comes back ) , multiple heart tests to understand what was causing my arrhythmia etc. etc. etc.

The U.S. would be very challenged to implement such a program to such a large population base. There would be such a surge of people hitting the system right out of the gate...particularly people that have never had coverage. The key would be finding a way to roll the program out without seeing an immediate collapse. Christ..half of Mexico would be converging on the hospitals!

I don't think its a good idea. I don't like paying for other people. I have healthcare and I always have made it a priority. Instead of having shit and material possessions, I had healthcare. I take jobs that offer healthcare. People should take responsibility of their finances and do it themselves. One more case govornment doing things they have no buisness doing i.e automobiles and banking.

I'm not sure I want the government getting involved in this because I just don't think they're probably capable of running such an operation. On the flip side though, I think the insurance companies have gone too far in their attempts to make even more money. Maybe what we really need are some private insurnace companies that can better compete with the big boys and help bring costs down through more competitive rates.

I applaud your rugged individualism, but that lifestyle is way too hardcore for me. I'd rather just chip in a few bucks to the pot and work wherever I want to work.
What do I care if somebody else uses it? In fact, I'd feel better about myself for helping out the next guy.

Well I guess my priorities are straight. My job has awsome healthcare so I don't worry too much. If I lost my job I'd get Humana again.

And as for caring if someone else uses it, I work hard for what I make and there are already too many people that expect things from the govornment. Where does it stop? Welfare is already a damn joke so what else do people want?

I'm just saying that your original post made it seem as if you don't have material posessions because you spend your money on health care, and you chose your line of work based on the health care provider.
I imagine you exagerrated a bit to make the point, but if your post is true, you're becoming an indentured servant of an insurance company.
Not a priority I would choose.
