    Default Reality Check

I have a 5150 Comb and I am thinking of getting rid of it. I am a novice guitar player who probably will never play a gig. I do not want to keep going and buy all stomp pedles and other stuff to sound like EVH.

I am thinking of an amp that has built effects and moedeling so I can come real close to EVH, but can also do that classic hair band sound and maybe even do Boston tone. It doesn't even need to be an amp. Could be pod or tone lab. What is my best bet. I just want to have fun, maybe even learn to play the solo to 5150 from Live w/o a Net before I die. Love that solo.

    What should I do

    Peavey Vyper
    G-Dec
    pod
    Tone Lab
    Rockman X100?

    What are your thoughts?

    1) keep the 5150 combo. Don't make the mistake I made, and sell it. Later on, when you're employed and make real money, you can mod the sh*t out of it for almost nothing. When the time is right, change the speakers to 20 watt Celestions, and don't ever play through the Lead channel.

    2) any of your suggestions are fine, assuming you're not particular regarding tube tone. I bought the Line6 GearBox unit for I think $50, and it's been awesome for recording straight to my Mac into Garage Band.

I will have to agree with Majestic. DO NOT sell that 5150 combo! I couldn't even think about selling mine. It has so much power!!!!

How much are you looking to spend on your practice rig?

Also, an attenuator can get your 5150 combo sounding MUCH better, even stock. Check out the Weber Mass Lite 100 Watt version... it's pretty amazing.

OK, so if I keep the combo, what about all the other stuff I need. Flanger, phaser, delay, chorus, etc.....

for the delay and detune pickup a gmajor or digitech 2120 off ebay. great units. i had a eventide and sold it a few yrs ago to free up more rig money and got the 2120. its a good unit. you could also use that for your delay. eventide also has the pitchfactor you could look at and it not only has the h3000 voicings but the 949 which is awesome.

U could check Line-6 as well. if you like a more tube tone, their new Tube version, Spier Valve is pretty cool amp with a very good modeling engine. it's a bit more expensive, but selling your 5150 should cover it i would think.

if you're looking into something cheaper, their spider models are quite interesting as well.

I totaly understand wanting to part with such a heavy amp specialy if you don't gig infront of 1000 peoples. it's not like those amps are'nt easy to find in anycase. and not going up in price as well. if you want another one down the road, quite easy to find.

My choice would be the Spider Valve personnaly. Go try i out. best thing realy.

As an owner of a 5150 half stack and a Line 6 Spidervalve 112 combo I can tell you in my opinion keep the Peavey. I use more outboard effects with the Line 6 than I do with the Peavey. The Line 6 has very weak on board effects in my opinion. The Line 6 is a loud amp that sounds good when you push the tubes so if playing at a low indoor volume is your goal the Line 6 might be too much. You can try running the 5150 through a HOT Plate to control the gain.

+1 Jim told me to get a 2120 a long time ago and I did -- it is an amazing piece of gear. I use mine for both detune (to smooth the tone out and make it sound 'bigger') and delay. It also has programmable built in phasers, flangers, rotary speaker effects, etc. etc.

The 2120, was on the digitech site, has it been replaced by the new rack processor?

I would say keep the 5150 combo, and get Peavey Vyper. The 6505 setting on the Vyper is pretty close. The best one is the one that has the tube power section. I think it's $500 or $600.

If you just want something to screw around with in your house, just get the small Vyper. You can get one for $100.

was looking at the Peavey Vyper, b ut wasn't sure how many effects used at the same time I would need to pull off EVH w/o outside effects. The bigger the Vyper, the more effects you can use at the same time.
