Man, I give you credit. I've been playing for about 2 years as well, and there's no way I'd have enough guts to record a cover and post it. Nice job.

    Good for you.

Keep doing that. Figure out as much by ear as possible, do not rely on tabs unless you are stuck. Tabs for growing players can be a crutch of sorts when used too much. Learning tunes by ear is an excellent way to develop your musical ear and the exploration is just another way to get intimate with the guitar and music. As good as lessons are noodling around and experimenting on your own is a big part of it as well.

Gah, that is so me. I'm guilty, guilty, guilty. I have now banished all tabs from my computer. That's half my problem right there.

Use them but use your ear more. By ear try to figure out the key the song is in first and go from there. If you can, try to figure out the riff etc but try to figure out the chords, the flavor of chords being used, the mode of scales being used in the solo..how it all relates etc. Doing so will not only develop your ear but also strengthens your basic theory and way around the instrument at the same time.

If you only go by tabs you can still work on figuring these things out but a lot of people simply play what the tab says and don't worry about how anything relates to anything else. I think you miss out on 2 important elements/lessons that way. Thats why I say it's a crutch for a player who has trouble figuring things out by ear...they don't work on it enough to make strides with it. Adding the theory element speeds the process up.
You are working on multiple skills that way while developing your ear.

Lessons (and sticking to em)are a huge help with the theory. You can even learn a lot on websites etc as well as long as you work on it.

At first it's frustrating. You have to stick with it & in time things WILL open up and you will hear/find things quicker with more accuracy. 100% guaranteed.

In time with a simple straight forward type band like The Rolling Stones or AC/DC for example...you will be able to hear exactly what's going on and practically know the entire song on first listen just hearing it.. without your guitar in hand. Then when you pick up your guitar you noodle around to find the nuances and go from there. It grows from there too so if you stick with developing this.. what started out as frustrating and seemingly futile hard way turns into a rewarding, important and empowering skill. One that will never leave you.

It's all easier than it sounds. Time and patience and willingness to work at it is all it takes. A big payoff awaits you.

I don't mean to hijack this thread with my general info but I just wanted to stress the benefits of this to you and offer some encouragement. Some guys could likely give you much better advice but there you have it. lol GL!

    Peace

    Using tabs ain't a crime dude :P
What i suggest you do is look at the first 2 or 3 for notes of a riff on the tab, then try doing the rest by ear, see it as, a guideline :P
