A Very Costly Kiss: Senior Denied Diploma

For teens, there is no greater joy than graduating high school. Shaking off the shackles of education and claiming that hard-fought diploma is truly an epic day. Unfortunately, for several students at Bonny Eagle High School in Maine, their natural exuberance has led to some surprisingly serious problems.

On Friday night, when the senior class was waiting to graduate, excitement began to grow. Students bounced a large inflatable rubber duck. The noise level rose. And then came "the kiss." When called, one student walked on stage to receive his diploma and blew a kiss to his family. The school administrator, clearly not the sentimental sort, sent the student back to his seat ... sans diploma.

The seemingly harsh punishment has sent the Web all aflutter. Searches on "student denied diploma" and "bonny eagle high school" are both through the roof. Additionally, blogs and news papers are chiming in with opinions on whether or not the administration overreacted. The student's mother has given interviews and is quite upset at her son's treatment. According to an article from Fox News the outraged mother said, "A bow, a kiss to your mom is not misbehavior."

But the administrators feel they were just enforcing the rules that students agreed to. At a meeting following the debacle, school superintendent Suzanne Lukas said that "if a student doesn't adhere to the expectations, then the consequences are clearly spelled out."

This isn't the first time that rambunctious (dare we say "fun"?) behavior affected a graduation ceremony at Bonny Eagle. "Four years ago we had some issues with silly string and beach balls," said Lukas.

Fuckin' Maine-iacs! I mean, I could see the kid getting kicked out of our graduation for harbouring a beer bottle under his robe, but blowing a kiss? And looking at Standish on a map, it's out in Bum Fuck East, so I'm guessing the senior class might've been about an even dozen? Topless doughnuts, kiss blowing - what's next, giving a Canadian the finger? Place has gone to hell since I left! Oh, wait, it was hell before - that's why I left in the first place!

I was just about to post this but as usual Voivod beats me to the punch!

This could have just as well happened at my high school. I HATED my high shool. Before graduation all the seniors were taken into the gym and the principles and superintendent gave us a talking to. We were told that graduation had nothing to do with us, that it wasn't a moment for us to be seen as individuals or for us to make ourselves stand out. We were told, very specifically, this was a moment for the school and then to a lesser extent our parents. There would be no tolerance individual celebrations of any kind whatsoever. That meant no waves to the crowd, no silly walks, no funny coloured socks or shoes. Our family would be escorted away if they used air horns or released balloons and any, literally ANYTHING that they deemed inappropriate would be grounds for removal from the ceremony and denial of our diploma and graduation. PERIOD. WE WOULD NOT GRADUATE.

Everything was specifically coordinated from what we could wear under our robes to how long it should take us to get to the podium, grab the fake diploma, shake the principle's hand and get back to our seat.

They had all the assistant principle bullies patrolling the rows of students waiting for their name to be called looking for any walkmen, radios, contraband, hand holding etc. Then they had police patrolling the stands looking for airhorns, balloons, signs deemed unsuitable.

It was a real sucky time.

And get this, it wasn't some innner city ghetto school with a bunch of nasty rowdy kids and families. This was in suburban houston with one of the higher tax brackets and most well funded schools in the state at that time. This was all fueled back backwards thinking, ultra-conservative, baptist bullshit.

If a kid had grabbed his fake diploma and acknowledged the audience he would have gotten in trouble. I'm surprised we HAVEN'T heard a story about my high school like this...I guess little old Deer Park Texas is so well isolated from the world that things go unnoticed.

Hell, I never even heard anything on the news when a student teacher was found to be sleeping with a bunch of girls and telling them that he'd make sure that each one would be the star of the next one-act play.

what a shitty high school I had.
    Stay out of it, dude.

I've seen graduation ceremonies look like a hockey game.

air horns, face painting, smuggled alcohol, victory celebrations, cheering fans, fights in the stands

there should be a dignified way of doing this...it is a transforming moment in a persons life

the kid didn't just blow a kiss tho....he blew a kiss, took a bow, took out some special necklace that he had won as a track award and did a little victory dance thing

he should have just played by the rules and he wouldn't have ruined his own graduation

    Hang on now,
Are you suggesting hockey fans are undignified?

That all happened at my high school graduation, but it was the parents who brought the air horns and beach balls and silly string in. It's a celebration. If a person wants to celebrate by blowing a kiss or and air horn or whatever, I don't see the harm in it. Yes it's obnoxious, and distracting, but I think not giving a diploma to someone or really any form of punishment is completely unnecessary.

Two sides to every story. Graduations are not a pep rally. Air horns, silly string, etc are ridiculous.

If all this student did was blow a kiss it does seem extreme. Something is missing here.

Before my graduation we all met in the auditorium where the principal gave a short speech about 'this event being about each and every one of you. If you want to throw beach balls around and make a party of this, that's your choice, but 20 years from now when you look at the video(which I never cared to record) it will be alot nicer if you all behave like adults.'

Of course we had beach balls bouncing all over the place, mice were let go on the floor and someone had a white dove under their gown that was set free in the middle of the ceremony. At 38 years old, I still think it was better than if we had 'acted like adults.'

I think graduations should be giant orgasms of emotion where everyone is allowed to experience and express all the relief, the anger, the rage, the pride, the love, the sadness, the longing, the regret, joy, the fear and everything else that they might be feeling. If it manifests itself in the way beach balls and air horns and a streaker? So be it. If it manifests itself in a quiet, formal ceremony...so be it but they should be organic and the students and parents should be allowed to express themselves in the way that feels natural and appropriate to them.

The stuff shirt fascists assholes at my high school saw it as one last chance to exhibit their control and their power over everyone.

Sounds exactly like the assholes at John I Leonard Maximum Securit....er, High School. Didn't work too well, as the parents still brought airhorns and there was still lots of fun to be had.

My school is so relaxed about graduation (even though I'm only a junior, i've been to a few). Everyone has signs and airhorns. The senior prank this year actually consisted of bringing a single marble with you, and when you shook someone's hand, you'd give them the marble. Eventually, they'd be given so many marbles that they wouldn't know what to do with them! I don't know if it's been done before but I love it!

that was another thing the seniors were brought together to have explained to them. Anyone even caught talking or joking about staging a prank would be expelled period...they didn't care if it was just hours before the last day of school...expelled no diploma, do the year over again.

Same thing with the senior picture. They said they would not tolerate anyone shooting the finger, flashing peace signs, waving, making faces or anything else. Before the photo was developed it would be reviewed and anyone caught drawing attention to themselves in any way shape or form would be expelled, no diploma and have their image airbrushed from the photo.
