    Default What's in Your Setlist?

So, the gig gods have smiled upon me again and a start-up club that had
been flirting with me to come and play guitar has finally come through with
an offer. The following is the setlist they gave me to learn this week. Not
the greatest - a little light for my taste, but enough stuff to sink my teeth
into and I'll be requesting some edgier stuff as we go and I get my say in
    things.

Lemme say upfront I'm glad to be getting paid to play again and all
attendant sarcasm is me just being the cheeky bastard I am.

    I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonite - U2
Thought this was one of the dumbest song titles I'd seen in a while, but I like
the tune and learning it makes me remember why I like U2 in general and
that The Edge is the master of less-is-more cleverness.

    By the Way - RHCP
When is a guitar song a non-guitar song? When it's John Frusciante. OK, I've
just said I can appreciate the less-is-more thing, but this is ridiculous.

    Black Magic Woman - Santana
One of those songs that seems like more than it is b/c of the arrangement.
But it's just 3 chords and hopelessly dated, imo. I like Carlos in princliple,
but damn, it's hard to play as bad as he does on some of this. So I'll do my
own thing as is my MO anyway. That said, the signature melodies are great
and I'll keep 'em, of course.

Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana
What covers set would be complete without it? Could play it in my sleep and
prolly did in my Rock City days. But I like it for it's simple aggression and
the solo is a good melody that's fun to embellish.

    Easy - The Commodores
The hardest one for me to grasp just b/c I don't have a feel for it. I even
listened to FNM's version, but it's basically identical, less the modulation at
the end. But the solo is classic. I think I just need to invent something for
it so it's not so wedding-bandy.

Play That Funky Music - Wild Cherry
Holy fuck, it's embarassing to type that, much less play it. But I'm determined to come up with something cool for it, just like our boy Ed might've.

Half the World Away - Oasis
Had never heard of it before, maybe b/c I hate Oasucks.

    Wonderwall - Oasis
I mean, fuck do I hate these guys. But this is prolly their best tune and as
strummy chords changes go, it's ok and gives me a breather where I don't
have to think too much or sweat the technique. "Beer please."

    Vertigo - U2
Another one I already had down. Easy enough.

Still Got the Blues - Gary More
A hilite in this set. Something to dig into. Nice changes. I like it, and his tone kills on this.

    Better Man - Pearl Jam
See Oasis. Fuck, these guys bore me to piss. No there there. Never got their
appeal much, even though the lyric here is not bad. But I think I liked this
song better when it was English Beat's Sooner or Later. Maybe I can talk
them into a new arrangement later. If not sooner.

What's Going On - Marvin Gaye. No that would be cool. Four Non Blondes.
3 chords of hellish torment. Why do people like this dumb songs? Clearly the three-legged dog of the lot.

Sweet Child o Mine - GnR
The tour de force of this set, this is one of the songs that in learning and
playing, made me appreciate them more than I ever had before. It's fun
    to rip on this.

    One - U2
So can you tell this set was put together by a singer yet? A decent tune, tho.
I also think it would be a cool idea to do a bit of a medley with No Woman No Cry, since the changes are kinda similar.

    So, what you rockin on?

My band does Play That Funky Music. The way I was able to make it somewhat interesting is playing the main riff with the wah pedal and adding some distortion to dirty it up. We also play it faster than the recording.

Everyone in my band hates it too but it does get the girls dancing.

I've never been in a bar band. I'll be interested to see what some of you guys are playing. I know my back up singer has an r/b and funk band and they do all the stuff you'd expect but also do some interesting curve balls as well.

If I were to find a bar band gig I think I'd populate the setlist with a bunch of 90s grunge and post grunge stuff. I'd try to include stuff from all the big guys like Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains and what not but also stuff from the Breeders, Veruca Salt, Belly, Westerberg, matthew sweet, concrete blonde, Juliana hatfield etc. Then I'd also have the post-grunge stuff like Gin Blossoms...definitely have to do some blind melon and oasis, toad the wet sprocket, defintely do a bunch of Toadies stuff.

it would be a ton of fun to be in a band like that. Hell, maybe I need to figure out how to put one together!
    Stay out of it, dude.

Funny this should be bought up, as I came across an old, barely legible, setlist from around the late 80's when we were playing skating rinks, bars (essentially anywhere we could). Tried to take a pic, but the damn thing is too washed out for it to turn out, but this was what I could read:

    Set 1
    Train, Train
    Panama
    illegible
    Gimme 3 Steps
You Shook Me All Night Long
    Take This (our own song)
    Closer to the Heart
    Come Together

    Set 2
    Against the Wind
    More Than a Feeling
    You Got Another Thing Coming
    illegible
    illegible
    High 'n' Dry
Guitar Solo - You Really Got Me
    Life In The Fast Lane

    Final set
    Juke Box Hero
    Stone in Love
    illegible
    Free Bird
    Rock and Roll
    Crazy Train
    Wanted Man
    Unchained

    Encore
    Tom Sawyer
    Hot For Teacher

Funny that you had the balls to throw in a guitar solo at what was essentially a cover gig. I have a recording of my high-school band from when i was in 10th grade. They let us play at a pep rally on a Friday night and gave us about an hour. Somehow, the other guitarist and I each managed to squeeze in a "solo" in a set of what was essentially classic rock covers (Cream, AC/DC, Free, Led Zep, Floyd, etc.)! We just thought it was the thing to do back then.

I had just seen VH on the 5150 tour and had a bootleg, so, of course, I copped part of the 316 piece that Ed did on that tour. It's really terrible. I have to convert it to MP3 for posterity's sake...

The lead guitarist in our band was, in a word, outstanding. He could do 10 minutes and not waste a minute with 'noodling around'. Sadly, he decided to take his life on Christmas Eve of 1989, which gives me a soft spot for Poison's "Something to Believe In."

Most of the gigs we play are 3 sets of 15 songs. We will usually go on at 10 and play until 2. There are 2 singers in the band and they trade off songs so it helps save their voices. Check out the links below in my signature of my band playing on the local ABC affiliate in Dallas. I am playing the white Strat.

I was just messing with you, man. The setlists we had back in the 80's when we were the ONLY band in the house were tiring, especially when I was the drummer.

Mostly bars here in NJ. We don't make much, but we don't really care either. We all have careers, so it's just for fund.

Damns, I ams officially jealous. Lotta cool tunes there.

As far as the gigs here, I don't bother much with the schlupping-of-the-gear
around variety - I'm far too old for that! My last two jobs are for house-band
situations that have everything more or less set up for you. The last one
paid all my bills, whereas the new one is strictly an extra cash scenario.
It's a start-up club and they are so in the red I almost feel bad asking
for anyhting. But if things go well, I will have no problem renegotiating.
