    Default Fair Warning & Balance

Lately I've been spinning these 2 albums heavily. I consider (and I'm sure most do) these 2 albums to be VH's darkest albums lyrically and musically and I also consider them to be the bands crown jewels of each era.

What are your opinions on these 2 albums. I'm not trying to start a war between the 2 eras, just simply some opinions on these 2 great albums.

Since you're right, there's really nothing more to add.

    I'd go there.

FW: Gold. Made me a VH fan.
Balance: Awesome, back-to-the-basics album for the Hagar-era band....as well as the last great Halen album.

    BTW......like the user name.

I always liked the production on Balance. Funny though because some fans were turned off by the album because it wasn't the obvious summertime party music like the past.

I think they're the best produced albums from the two eras. Fair Warning is my second favorite VH album, right behind the first one. Balance, IMO, is not nearly as strong as 5150 and is a tad weaker than OU812 and F.U.C.K.

Balance good, songwriting wise not as strong as FW. Crossing Over would've improved it. There's at least 4 songs that I think are weak on there. Not enough good material to make it a classic album, IMO. As a matter of fact I think the Chickenfoot album has better songs, overall.

To me, they were at their best with Fair Warning. Even the throwaway track "One Foot Out the Door" is good.

Balance has a few stinkers on it, but the A game material is awesome, my favorite Hagar disc and yes, the last great Van Halen album.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

I love Fair Warning. Eddie brought it to that album.

I like Balance. The album could've used a few more straight up rock songs but overall I think it's good.

I like Balance quite a bit. I see it as a real transitional record for them and, just as I'm quite curious as to what would have followed VHIII, I'm quite curious as to what would have followed Balance. There's a lot of crap on the record but what is good is really really good. It would be interesting to have seen what direction they would have gone in.

I love both albums, but would love to know what would have been had OU812 had been produced better.

The production on Balance is terrific and even today it still sounds fresh and alive, as opposed to OU812 which I think is VH's worst produced recording ever.

Most of the songs on Balance are very strong and I like the fact that it is not the typical VH party material. I think Sam kind of ruined Amsterdam a bit and Not Enough is one I'm not thrilled about, but everything else is really strong.

FW is a rare gem, it is very angry and aggressive and dark. Everything on that is perfect.

Agreed. I like what they were attempting to do, but the end result was flat much in the way Rush's "Presto" was. You could see what they were going for, but it all just needed more OOMPH pumped into it.

Agreed for the most part. I still enjoy those two songs though.

Holy moly. I respect other peoples opinions but this just does not compute.

Interesting observation, but one I have to agree with for THAT particular VH disc. I think considering the amount of times I do skip to the next track on "Balance" as opposed to CF.....it's a lock.

No, I cannot say the same for Warning. That's just the quintessential Halen album right there and yes, beats out CF by a large fuckin margin.

Balance, for all the praise that gets bestowed upon it, is a very confused record with a lot of plain old crap. Amsterdam, Big Fat Money, Strung Out, Doin' Time, Baluchitherium, Take Me Back are all pretty awful and Not Enough isn't real good either but what's good is very good, good enough for those songs to be among the best recorded with Sammy.
    Stay out of it, dude.
