    Hair bands forever! Grunge never!

New article from MSNBC.com. Van Halen and their influence are mentioned about 1/2 way into the article.

Hair bands suck. I'll take Pearl Jam over Poison any day of the week.

I'm feeling a little snarky right now, so there you have it.

Give me AIC and Soundgarden over 90% of hair metal.

    Yup.

Interestingly enough, since becoming an iPod owner for the first time in February, I now literally take my entire music collection with me wherever I go. I've rediscovered Alice In Chains and Soundgarden and found both to be awesome driving music.

Agreed. It's popular to blame the likes of Nirvana and their ilk for the death of
rock, but 'metal' neutered itself and choked on its own hairspray. That said, I
found only a limited enjoyment of most of the 'grunge' bands and was deeply
disappointed at the turns hard rock history took. I find no consolation in the
fact that VH inspired a bunch of vapid crap. Just one more thing history will
    blame on them.

Agree 1000%. What I would like to know is who can we blame for all these flamers reuniting and touring now. Who started this shit. Was it the Eagles that gave everyone the idea that they could reunite as a nostalgia act and make a lot of money. Why is a band like Cheap Trick touring with losers like Poison. I just don't get it. I for one can't wait to hear the new AIC album and see them out on tour.

Early 80's hair metal like Ratt's "Out of the Cellar" and Motley's "Shout at the Devil" among others were great discs.

But by the end of the decade you are getting shit like Danger Danger singing "Naughty Naughty". They have themselves to blame, they made a mockery of themselves, I mean who can take that seriously for very long? I heard a Firehouse song on the radio last week and it made me cringe, something like "Shake and Tumble Down to the Ground", bleh.

Loved AIC and Soundgarden, liked some of Nirvana and a little bit of Pearl Jam, but the rest of grunge I really didn't care for.

I think AIC and Soundgarden are more metal oriented anyway.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

Alice In Chains is far and away my favorite "grunge" band. I got to see them open for VH during the For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge tour. Awesome. This song, unfortunately, was a little too prophetic for Layne Staley:

"It's so lonely at the top because it's so crowded at the bottom" - Diamond David Lee Roth

"If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving is not for you"

"Be careful what you wish for because you just might lose what you already have"

Yup, they were trying to fit in with what was big at the time. There 4 disc box set has some of the music from that time on it.

    Check this out.

Agreed. Bands that came out in the early eighties that where labled "hair bands'" smoke that whoa is me grunge shit. Bands that came out in the late eighties were fun to laugh at. Ten year shelf life for genre specific music.
Good bands keep on keeping on.

Neither genre can touch the classic 70's.

What early 80's bands besides VH had any staying power and continued to put out good music late into the decade? Very few...in fact I can't think of any.
