Default Songs that are IMPOSSIBLE to perform live

Upon reviewing a recent posting of Humans Being, I'm reminded that there are some songs that (at least for me) were so perfectly created in the studio that their live counterparts have always suffered.

Humans Being is just one such song for me. Another is Turn It On Again by Genesis. They just never get that quite right.

What live performances have let you down?

"Fortunate Son"...I've Seen Fogarty many times and it never sounds right to me. Another one, even though it's one of my favorite Stones tunes, is "Tumbling Dice".

One of my favorite Vai compositions is Bangkok/Fire Garden Suite. Amazing on the cd. Godly cool. Sucked/sucks live.

Found a recording of this live some years ago. Was fairly excited about the find at first.

But, paled in comparison to the original...........

Of all the times I have seen DLR solo, Yankee Rose has not sounded good once.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

I never expect to hear carbon copies of songs when I see a concert, so when a band hits it close to the mark I'm pleasantly surprised and when they don't, I take it for what it is. Of all the shows I've been to, I can't think of anything that stands out as "they missed that by a mile". Now, there could be a good thread of "songs that are impossible to listen to live", and that would probably start with anything by Yoko and then make its way down to "How Many Say I"!

I've always thought JUMP live in 1984 was horrible. With Ed on keys the whole time that song misses big time without the signature guitar licks.

I remember hearing Humans Being w/ Gary and thought it was good. hmm

Poundcake never sounded right to me live, i think the whole drill 'bit' pun intended, didnt sound the same.

Thread reminds me of the intro to Nuno's old band Mourning Widows first cd...basically, "if you can reproduce it live, then it aint worth shit".

that was the first thing I thought of when I saw this thread this morning. I can't find an audio of it though!

"Go it live...you wanna go live. If you can't, if you can't capture...your own feeling...playing live then it ain't...then ain't worth shit. If you can't capture...it ain't worth nothing...you wanna clean it up, a little bit for the tape...but you don't wanna do anything more than you can do live. If you, if you...you can't handle playing live...it ain't worth shit. I don't give a fuck whatever you wanna pull, whatever studio shit you wanna pull...if you can't do it live then it worth shit...the thing, the thing that's gonna sell albums is people fucking dancing. Cuz people fucking dancing they gonna stop and they gonna see Nuno go WAAAA WAAA WAAA WAAA WAA WAA WAAAAAA and they gonna stop and they gonna say MOTHERFUCKER!...and that's the shit that's gonna happen man...that's the shit that's gonna happen!"

something like that! I don't have the CD with me so that's from memory!
    Stay out of it, dude.

Without question, the most difficult piece of music ever written to be performed in a live setting has to be "The Star Spangled Banner". I mean think about it: In the history of modern society, this tune has been pulled off successfully by what...6 people on the entire planet? Even one of the more celebrated versions of this number (Whitney Houston's Super Bowl performance) was recorded beforehand in a studio, then lip-synced.

Hell, the list of performers who've managed to shit all over themselves (and the audience) trying to get this song across is a Youtube thread in and of itself. Carl Lewis, Rosanne Barr, the idiot Steven Tyler of Aerosmith (while performing the tune at a football game in New England, he found the entire crowd booing him 3/4 of the way through. In a pathetically desparate attempt to save face, he changed the final lines to "And the land of the Patriots". )...the list is quite long and embarrassing.

Chef - I have to disagree with you on this one. I have the complete opposite feeling about the song. I'm amazed at how often I see it done so well. Having gone to more professional hockey games than I could ever count, I've seen it performed a million times and almost all of them have been done extremely well.

The Boston Bruins the past few years have gotten away from using the same guy they have for decades and opted instead for giving many different people a shot at it. This year I saw a few young girls belt that song out with incredible energy and perfection. I'm not afraid to say I've gotten chills on more than one occasion and several of them led to huge ovations above the norm.

I love the SSB......always love watching people take a hack at it.

edit: Not arguing the point that it gets butchered, just saying I think it's done well far more than it's not.

Oh, I hear ya. Yet I think it also belies where you and I live. Where as your area is known for it's cultural refinement and inherant professionalism, mine is known for putting a dolphin inside a swimming pool in the end zone of our football stadium, for natural disasters and for the (alleged) exposure of Jim Morrison's wang. As a result, you and I are naturally biased in different directions.
