Default "Van Halen without Ed and Al..."

    This is from...
    http://www.winnipegsun.com/entertain...97681-sun.html

"[Sammy] stressed it's Van Halen fans who should come to Chickenfoot shows.

"That's who we want to come and see this band," Hagar said. 'This is the best thing they can have is go see a Chickenfoot show or buy a Chickenfoot record because that is what they've been waiting for from Van Halen. It is Van Halen without Ed and Al.'"

I know, it could be (and probably will be, by many) dismissed as more Sammy hyperbole...but it got me to thinking about the future of our favorite band.

Specifically, could there be Van Halen without Ed or Al? Just for the sake of argument, if Ed is right, and Wolf is a genius...could the band go on composed of Dave, Al, Mike, and Wolf on guitar? If Al hangs them up, could Van Halen go on as Dave, Ed, Wolf and Chad Smith?

Contrary to all the "VH is more than just Ed-the-jackass" and "No Mike No VH" sentiment that gets thrown around here, I think Sammy's statement illustrates the absurdity of a VH without Ed. I hate to be a Kimmie here, but I think Chickenfoot has cemented the fact that Ed is one irreplaceable piece of Van Halen...
    I like Van Halen.

There can be Van Halen IV, but that's about it.
Sammy did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it.
Michael did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it.

A: Eddie Van Halen hands down he threatened all the stage hands that if we wernt all pushed to the side when he got off stage that he would "bash our faces in"

Now the new David-Lee-Roth-Van Halen album, “Tokyo Dome In Concert,” is available for purchase, and it’s super, super, super, super, super, super, crazy bad. - Doug Elfman

Thats about it indeed. Without Ed or Al, it won't be Van Halen. Hopefully Wolfie will turn out to be a really good player, but only time will tell. Whatever he does in the future, probably won't resemble what Van Halen was to so many.

Conceivably, you could have VH with just about anybody if they have the legal right to use the name. There have been plenty of examples with bands going out on the road or recording with maybe one original member, sometimes not even the most visible guy. I remember seeing Bad Company once and the only original guy was the drummer Simon Kirke. I also remember hearing on a Behind the Music that at one time RATT bassist Juan Crouzier was the only legal member of RATT. It doesn't seem possible that there could be a VH without Ed, but you never know what can happen.

Practically speaking though, VH would not have much commercial viability without Eddie Van Halen.

Van Halen without Ed is as foolish as Led Zeppelin without Robert Plant. It's an insult to us all.

It's interesting to think about, like it or not, Eddie is Van Halen. Ed is the only irreplaceable element of Van Halen.

Eddie is the essence of VH Period.

Sammy is wack if he thinks his new Super Group is the new Van Halen.

That's almost as absurd as him saying Chickenfoot was as good as Led Zeppelin.

I guess CF sound is too similar to VH, even Satriani's sound is too similar to Ed's tone.
That's why people say stupid things like VH without ED & AL.

    NO EDDIE, NO VAN HALEN.
"I could call it anything, but the only word I can think of is Brown. It's just a warm sound. Warm, big, majestic" - Eddie Van Halen on his Tone

"Van Halen is definitely a ladies band, and I´ve got the Polaroids to prove it". - David Lee Roth

WOLFGANG did the IMPOSSIBLE, he brought back VAN HALEN, DEAL WITH IT.

    Give me a break.

Like there was anything memorable from Sammy and Mike in the past 10 years.

The Wabaritos were such a great band.

Ed and Dave toured as VH in 07/08 and they kicked ass.

I really wish Sam didn't draw comparisons to VH and specifically encourage VH fans to buy the record as a way to fill that VH void. Only adding fuel to the fire for all the anti-'Foot people out there.

Something tells me this thread is gonna go down the shitter in a hurry.

Yeah, it almost seems like he's saying, "Hey if VH isn't going to capitalize on the VH name to sell new music, I sure will. I'll milk that puppy for all it's worth."

Partially to sell albums, partially to stick it to VH. He's not using a heavy club or anything, just a little rib jab. I still think it's within the bounds especially after Eddie has gotten his digs in. Doesn't bother me from either side. I guess the only difference for me is one side has produced music.

Maybe...I think Sammy's claim gets to the heart of the "Future" portion of this board. Let's face it, Sammy ain't gonna stop till he drops, Dave's back in the limelight and loving it, Wolfie can play a bit, Mike loves rocking and interacting with the fans. It looks like the future of Van Halen isn't going to lack for singers or bassists.

Who knows what's in Al's robot head? Would you be surprised if he hung them up tomorrow? If he did, could Ed and company rock on with a different drummer?

And talk about uncertain...booze, writer's block, myelin disintegration, cello studies, creating stuff...who knows what will befall Ed...or when. If/when Ed finally unplugs the guitar could the band go on?
    I like Van Halen.
