Default Am I reading too much into Down the Drain?

Every time I hear that sony, I have to wonder if that is Sam citing that things went to shit w/ Van Halen.

    - Used to wake up for breakfast (refernce to 2004 CD)

I can't remember the exact words but
    - You treated me bad - but that's how friends rolled.
    - Then it all went down the drain.

    ?

It reminds me a bit of the Can't Get This Stuff from the DLR tracks on the 96 GH CD....
Winners come and go; legends are forever.

Either way, Van Halen did throw a lot down the drain when they got rid of Sammy. They lost consistency, quality, and momentum, of which they have yet to re-gain.

the lyrics are posted in a thread somewhere around here. I dig the first verse and I love the chorus but after the first few lines make it seem like he's talking about something serious he goes into the whole "need lovin' first thing in the moring and last thing in the evening" schtick and it all but ruins the song.

I wish it were something more, but in this instance, yep, you're reading too deep. The song is about sammy not getting enough sex and how his relationship with his formerly accomodating mate has now gone down the drain.

edit: here you go...this is the thread where folks typed out the words.

Good question. Sammy said in concert (I think it was Park West, Chicago) that the lyrics made no sense since they were written on the spot. Kind of a hodgepodge of one liners in this one. So I think considering that, it's quite possible that those particular lines came out as something that could possibly directed at VH, but the song overall might not exactly be completely about that.

He used UFB simply as a verse of a song he'd previously written, IMO.

I don't think he intended the song to be about VH. Although since he was IN Van Halen, lots of folks are looking for lyrics that reference his former band.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em. -

I think the "up for breakfast" line is purposeful. But I think he means it in the sense that his relationship was like the song UFB but now it's all DTD.

The only song Sam has ever said was written specifically about his parting with Van Halen was "Little White Lie." I hear the loose VH reference in DTD, but I don't think it was meant to be about that.

    Fuck!

    You remember that?
    That was a bitch.

I think Sam did a pretty good job on the songwriting in general.
I haven't found a single tequila feference on the CF album yet, which is a breakthrough.
The Edge... there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over.

I thought "Down The Drain" was more of a reference to losing life as a single man. I'm reminded of his story about how he met Kerri. (I think that's his wife's name.) He had come off of a divorce and was enjoying being single again and how he had no plans to be in a relationship. Then, out of nowhere, there she was. And now, his life is forever changed. With this song, he's talking more about the sex and how enjoyable it is with the right person.

    Perhaps it's just my view.

Sam's lyrics are probably about his life experiences which include VH. Personally I hear all of Sam's career in the lyrics throughout the CD.

From "jump on it", "hey baby", or "up for breakfast". The line 'force feed me with a silver spoon' could be about VH giving us WVH instead of Mike. Sam's life is all over the lyrics. Is DTD about VH? Probably at some level.
