    Default CF Review

Sorry to disagree with a lot of people around here, but I just downloaded C.F. from iTunes Canada ($9.99 btw) and have listened twice over the headphones. The people claiming this is a gem have completely lost it as music critics.

There is way too much cheese throughout this record. Hagar's pitched vocal melodies are a joke on so many verse and chorus sections throughout. His prosody is amateurish. There really is no discernable quality vocal melody on 33% of the stuff he sings. He's just getting lazy or either he's too rich these days. His lyrics are also noticeably pathetic in many places.

So much of the guitar is STOCK crap. Joe has adapted so many riffs of the past. The number of quality guitar segments is small for player with his songwriting chops.

After hearing SoaR and DtD, I was really looking forward to this record but most of the record is much weaker than these 2 tunes.

I break it down like this in order of descending quality:

    1.Truly Amazing Songs:
    "Down the Drain"
    "My Kinda Girl"

    2.Great Songs:
    "Soap on a Rope"
    "Future in the Past"

    3.Good Songs:
    "Turnin' Left"

    4.Cheese:
    "Get It Up"
    "Avenida Revolution"
    "Sexy Little Thing"
    "Oh Yeah"
    "Runnin' Out"
    "Learning to Fall"
    "Bitten by the Wolf"

The songs that are good are very good, BUT the problem is that the poor songs should have never made this record. The band should have worked for another couple of months to "find and construct" another 5 or so songs to fill out the record.

I do like how in Down the Drain "Bron-Yr-Aur" segues into "Runnin with the Devil". Very Interesting.

well...most of what I've heard has been a case of the three trying to compensate for the one. Even on the songs that I like more than the others (Avenida and Down the Drain) Sammy's melodies are very uninteresting and his lyrics...yeah, pretty trite.

That said, be prepared young one. Be prepared for what is coming.

    Stay out of it, dude.

Sorry, you don't like it. I love it, and no I'm most definitely NOT a music critic. I'm just a lover of music and this album fits my taste.

    Heh.
Sammy did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it.
Michael did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it.

A: Eddie Van Halen hands down he threatened all the stage hands that if we wernt all pushed to the side when he got off stage that he would "bash our faces in"

Now the new David-Lee-Roth-Van Halen album, “Tokyo Dome In Concert,” is available for purchase, and it’s super, super, super, super, super, super, crazy bad. - Doug Elfman

I can't even tell you what spin I am on with this stuff anymore, but it is damn good stuff. I guess some folks were expecting Fair Warning or Balance.

This album and the new Green Day are the only albums even close to 'our' genre this year.....and they both kick ass.

I think its one of the best CD's I own. I only got into VH like 3 years ago, so all those songs arn't as old to me as they are to others, and I can say this ranks to me along with my top ten CD's I own, including Fair Warning, Balance, FUCK, 5150 of VH. That's just me though, it is exactly the type of music I like. Who knows, with their next CD (or EP as sam said in the 12 days of foot), they'll have a year or so to write a new CD, could sound very different.

    For now, this ROCKs!

That will change on July 28th when the new Gov't Mule CD, "By a Thread" hits stores. If you want good hard Rock and Roll that's a bit more cerebral, Mule is it.
