    Supergroup Chickenfoot an uninspiring cocktail

We expect pomp and grandiosity from our supergroups. But when erstwhile Van Halen members Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith and stunt guitarist Joe Satriani joined forces, they settled on a less than inspiring moniker: Chickenfoot. Yes, Chickenfoot. For all the name conveys, the group might as well have called itself Gone Fishin'.

Indeed, there's a certain busman's holiday quality to Chickenfoot, as if its principals came together not in service of any great musical vision but because they seemed to have had nothing better to do with their time between albums. At a sold out Park West on Friday night, the quartet did its best to rise to the occasion, even if the bar was set pretty low, and for about 90 minutes the guys played their hearts out and had a blast doing it, boldly sticking almost entirely to songs from its coming album (due June 9).

Yet as nothing more or less than the exact sum of its parts, Chickenfoot was a little like mixing all the soft drinks together at a local fast-food stop into a dubious cocktail: It didn't taste terrible, but it didn't taste particularly good either. Songs such as "Soap on a Rope," "Sexy Little Thing," "Oh Yeah" and "Get It Up" mostly featured sub-Zeppelin riffs several years past their expiration date, Hagar's and Anthony's hammy vocals and blistering, yet out of place, sci-fi solos from Satriani, all in service of tunes too silly, turgid or stupid to take seriously.

There's a place for stupidity in rock, of course. But stupidity plus banality is a deadly combination. The already famous and successful members of Chickenfoot may hope history repeats itself, but if the pointless band skirts tragedy, it instead heads straight to farce.

I think some people are just deaf...or stupid...or both.

It doesn't take a genius to hear this is a very well constructed professional album. Silly.

i don't imagine the critics will be very kind to the CF cd. There's nothing really special or new about it. No track that stands out and demands their attention. It's kind of an old school rock record just not as good as they used to be.

I honestly think many of us are just so starved for a VH-type rock album that we see this 2 1/2 star record as something outstanding. If VH would have released this after Balance I think we'd be pissing all over it. I don't think you can compare this to any of the stuff Sammy did with VH, but in all fairness to them (1) Sammy is 61 (2) this is the first time him and Joe have written together. Considering the circumstances it's not a bad offering - I think the shows will be much better than what we hear on the cd.

As a comparable I just got the new Green Day record and it's so much stronger than the Foot's first offering that shouldn't even be compared.

That's your opinion It's Me and I'm not starved for anything related to VH. Especially since I laughed at VH 4 and still wouldn't see them live today. Could care less. I like the album and think it's far better than you're giving credit for. We all have opinions, nobody expected it to change the world. Van Halen Mach IV won't either. I think the CD is great, and look forward to buying it. You know how many albums I have of Sam's (not VH albums).....ZERO.

I wouldn't listen to Green Day if they were the last band remaining on Earth. One of the most formulatic shit bands in history, I still haven't figured out why they people still listen to their embarrassing three-chord shit that all sounds the same. I would have thought that boring sound went out after "Dookie."

    So see, varying tastes sir.

And some of us that aren't starved for a new VH record think this rates a little higher then 2 1/2 stars. Also, who would compare this to the new Green Day album?

I'm kind of sad to see on a VH site to see someone so excited over a Green Day album. Shit really???? Is music that fucking bad now? Guess so. Come on It's Me, for someone who thinks LeFraud is a bitchass, I am disappointed!

    indeed.

i think the CF stuff is ok - just nothing really, really special. You know what I'm saying? Every VH album had something that kind of grabbed me. Even the Sammy solo stuff would have tunes that kind of grabbed me. Nothing on here has done that for me - don't know why. The whole is less than the sum of it's part for me. I like Sammy, I love Michael, like the work Chad did with the Peppers, never been a big Joe guy but the CF cd has some cool riffs on it. I just never hear it all coming together for some reason.

Just out of curiousity Brett (and I guess everyone else) how would you compare this to the stuff Sam did with VH? I think you all know my opinion on it but I'd be interested to know what everyone else thought.

We do disagree on GD, I like that embarssing 3 chord shit - lots of fun.

i think there are many on here that would agree that the new GD record is pretty damn fantastic. But I don't think I'm any more likely to convince of you of that then I am to convince you that Nash deserved those 2 MVPs.

I like some of these songs more than some of the Sam-VH stuff yes. I'm a Van Halen fan man, of course I like that shit more than Chickenfoot, but again I don't know why that matters. I am enjoying these songs, usually I burn out on stuff fast, but I keep finding myself not tiring of a lot of these songs.

I will say this, this album is 4 BILLION TIMES better than VH III.

it doesn't matter, just looking for a point of reference. I think you've been pretty fair on this recording. I'm just hearing other people go on about it like it's the greatest thing since sliced bread and I'm not getting it. I just don't understand if I'm missing something here or if people want to love it so much that they are heaping undeserved praise on it.

I'm in the minority, I actually kinda liked VH3 - that tour gave me good feelings for that edition of the band forever.
