Default Replicas....To gig or not gig with......

I get this all the time.... "Dude, why dont you use one of your Eddie replicas when you do eruption"?

My band does You really got me, so i found it fitting to add eruption. Problem is that I already feel like a douche playing eruption. Far be it from me to put the icing on the cake and play a EVH replica (although I have nearly all of them)......

I always think it is kinda gay when a cover band guitarist plays a replica like a Demartini, Van Halen, Lynch etc. If you are in a tribute band, that is another story.

    Whatta you think?

Depends on what your comfortable with. I don't get guitars unless I plan to play them out. I've already played the 5150 out a few times and it gets a few cheers from the crowd and a few people yelled out "mean streets" last time, so you jam out a little if its called for, but otherwise I don't think its that big a deal. it's prolly a bigger deal to us than it is to them...

I think you've already answered your own question, but nevertheless, I gotta agree with you, I could never play an EVH striped guitar on stage. I'd feel like a wannabe douche.

I'd feel pretty silly with one...just like the SRV signature with the big "SRV" on the pickguard.

I do have three signature models but none of them have any sort of "look at me! I'm a signature model!!!" flair on them.

I prefer to let my playing and singing do the expressing for me. That sounds like a really snooty and snotty thing to say, and I don't mean to imply that those who DO play with striped or otherwise signature gear, are somehow doing less than I am or whatever, I'm just saying, I'm a very reserved performer and I don't really like flashy clothes, guitars, or anything like that.

The fact that a striped guitar is someone else's flashiness, just makes it all the more silly for me.

If I came up with something that I liked, if I came up with my "striped motif" equivalent, then yeah, I'd use it but I haven't. Give me a plain strat, black pants, black shirt and tie and I'll be just fine.
    Stay out of it, dude.

Part of the problem I have with playing replicas on stage is that, as a musician, I want to have my own identity. It's that simple.

Having said that, I do have several replicas in my collection and even a few replica projects "in the works". These guitars intrigue me and I enjoy doing all the research, collecting reference photographs, and the challenge of building an accurate replica.

i agree you can look kinda stupid playing a striped guitar, but we don't do many van halen tunes anyway and my guitars aren't replica's they're tribute (hence the different stripe patterns or different colours) but if im perfectly honest....you can put your own identity on anything by the way you play it, my style is radically different from Eds, but i still get a kick playing striped guitars, i wear my influences on my sleeve, im not ashamed of that but i play my own way....its me no matter what guitar im playing.

I think the concept of playing a EVH replica while doing a VH tune is cool. My problem is I can just picture some drunk jackass coming up to me and saying, "hey guys, its Eddie Van Halen".

I will stick to my Charvels and Wolfgangs. People thing the Wolfgangs are PRS's. I get that quite often. "Hey, nice PRS". Whatever dude...... just dont look at my pedalboard, it has all the evh goodies....... then add the white EVH 5150 III in the background..... eeshhhh

I agree ... you can put your own identity on anything by the way you play it.
However, in my mind, there really is only one reason someone brings a replica on stage and it's not to create their own identity.
    Otherwise, what's the point?

If you idolize Jimmy Page or Slash, you can easily get away with bringing a Les Paul on stage without bringing much attention to the fact that you dig JP or Slash. However, bring a striped EvH replica on stage and you better be prepared to play your ass off or be ridiculed.

I've been truly impressed with the work a lot of the guys here at the Links have done with their EVH replicas and tribute guitars, etc. But even with having seen so many of them--and being a lifelong EVH fan--I still have no desire to build one. The reason: When and where would I play it? I can't possibly imagine strapping one on at a gig and being examined for my own playing. Even my young guitar students who come into my teaching studio at the music store associate the striped pattern with EVH (when they see the poster I have of him on the wall). The Wolfgang and EBMM guitars are very stealthy in the way you only really know what it is if you're a guitar guy or VH fan (sometimes not even then). But the replicas... I just can't see it being anything one could play live and be taken seriously. Except, of course, if you're in a tribute band, in which case I think it is completely called for.

Same here. I bring my replicas or at least Eddified guitars to rehearsal, but never on stage. It just happens that one of the best sounding guitars I own is based on the Frank and I dare not change anything on it 'cause it sounds wicked as is, so it's basically just a recording guitar that sees rehearsal duty. People dig her when they see her though, so maybe some day I'll be brave enough to pull it out on stage. Er..... the guitar I mean!
She looks so $#@!'n good ,so sexy and so frail....Somethin's got the bite on me, I'm goin' straight to Hell.

Like I said, I couldn't bring myself to hop on stage with a striped EVH replica (homemade OR factory made), but I have played gigs with this and a few of my other "Frankenmutts"...

Nah unless you're playing in a VH tribute band, I think playing a striped VH guitar live is pretty lame. No offense to anyone who does it, I just think it looks silly IMO.
