Default Airbus Jet with 228 aboard disappears over the Atlantic

Air France Jet Is Feared Lost on Flight From Brazil to Paris

    June 1, 2009

    http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/02/wo...e/02plane.html

PARIS — An Air France passenger jet traveling from Rio de Janeiro to Paris disappeared and was presumed to have crashed after its electrical systems malfunctioned during a storm with heavy turbulence on Sunday evening. Officials said Monday that a search had begun for the wreckage in a vast swath of the Atlantic Ocean.

The plane, an Airbus 330-200, was carrying 216 passengers, 9 cabin crew members and 3 pilots, the airline said.

The flight took off from Rio de Janeiro at 7:30 p.m. local time (6:30 Eastern time), and its last verbal communication with air traffic control was three hours later, at 10:33 p.m., according to a statement from the Aeronautica, the agency in charge of Brazilian air space. At that time the flight was at 35,000 feet and traveling 520 miles per hour.

About a half-hour after the radio call, the plane encountered an electrical storm with “very heavy turbulence,” said an Air France spokeswoman in Paris, Brigitte Barrand. The last communication from the plane was 14 minutes later — a series of automatic messages indicating that the aircraft had suffered an electrical-system malfunction, Air France officials said in Paris.

The chief Air France spokesman, Francois Brousse, said “it is possible” that the plane was hit by lightning, The Associated Press reported.

Brazilian officials said the plane disappeared over the Atlantic Ocean between the archipelago of Fernando de Noronha, 186 miles northeast of the coastal Brazilian city of Natal, and Ilha do Sal, one of the Cape Verde islands off the coast of Africa. It is a huge area of ocean, three times the size of Europe, officials said.

The plane was flying beyond the reach of Brazilian and Senegalese radar when it went missing — a gap that always occurs for aircraft on long trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific flights.

The Airbus 330 that disappeared is one of the newer “fly-by-wire” airplanes, which are highly dependent on electronics and computerization for everything from navigation to flight control. The aircraft has backup systems that kick in in the case of a power failure — including an air turbine that lowers from the aircraft into the airstream to provide energy for basic flight functions, and a battery for wing and landing gear settings for emergency landing.

But the backup power is limited, and in an emergency, pilots might hesitate to use the radio to conserve power for more critical functions, aviation experts said.

In older-generation airplanes, pilots actually move the aircraft’s wing flaps and other controls through cables and pulleys and hydraulic actuators, said Kevin Darcy, a former accident investigator for Boeing. In the newer planes, electronic signals activated by the pilots control the aircraft.

The A330 jet, which carries about 250 passengers, is a workhorse of long-distance aviation, used on routes where passenger demand was not big enough to warrant the use of the larger Boeing 777.

No Airbus 330-200 passenger flight has ever been involved in a fatal crash, according to the Aviation Safety Network, though the seven-person crew of a test flight died in a June 30, 1994, crash near Toulouse, France, where Airbus is based. The test was meant to simulate an engine failure at low speed with maximum angle of climb.

Lets hold out some hope, but it doesn't sound like we can expect any survivors.

The paragraph about manual controls being made totally automated/computerised is something that seems to come up time and again. No matter how good the technology, it's always good to have a human component.

Whatever. Doubtful this story will have a happy ending. Can't imagine what the families are feeling right now.

If the reports are right about the general area that the plane went down, it went down in the ITCZ (Inter Tropical Convergence Zone), the area which is the incubator for the North Atlantic Hurricane Season when things really crank up in August and September. This plane few some really nasty stuff as far as I can tell on GOES weather satellite.

As for 'fly by wire', it's been pretty common on commercial aircraft for a while and even moreso in military aircraft.

Dont they have a directional beacon that tells where the plane is if it crashes?

One of the black boxes will "Ping" for a few hours, the problem is getting ships to the area in time with the right sonar equipment to pick up the signal and triangulate the location.

We can, I don't know about Brazil.

The trick is to know where to look, and right now I'm not sure anybody knows where that is. This is a nightmare. That's a big ocean and the information searchers have is limited. If the plane went down along its projected flight path then they will have better luck. If the plane had turned around or diverted then it could be miles off course before it went in.

Sorta like the plane on LOST

Anyway, the lastest from Reuters says that the Brazilain and French navies won't have ships in the search area until noon Tuesday.

Plane debris found in path Air France jet took

BRASILIA, Brazil – An airplane seat, a life jacket, metallic debris and signs of fuel were found in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean on Tuesday by Brazilian military pilots searching for a missing Air France airliner.

The debris was spotted from the air about 410 miles (650 kilometers) north of the Brazilian island of Fernando de Noronha, roughly along the path that the jet was taking before it disappeared with 228 people on board, said Air Force spokesman Jorge Amaral.

There were no signs of life in two sightings of separate debris areas about 60 kilometers (35 miles) apart.

"The locations where the objects were found are towards the right of the point where the last signal of the plane was emitted," Amaral said. "That suggests that it might have tried to make a turn, maybe to return to Fernando de Noronha, but that is just a hypothesis."

Amaral said authorities would not be able to confirm that the debris is from the plane until they can retrieve some of it from the ocean for identification. Brazilian military ships are not expected to arrive at the area until Wednesday.

The discovery came more than 24 hours after the jet bound from Rio de Janeiro to Paris went missing, with all feared dead.

Rescuers were still scanning a vast sweep of ocean extending from far off northeastern Brazil to waters off West Africa. The 4-year-old Airbus A330 was last heard from at 0214 GMT Monday (10:14 p.m. EDT Sunday).

Investigators on both sides of the ocean were trying to determine what brought it down. Potential causes included shifting winds and hail from towering thunderheads, lightning or a combination of other factors.

An automatic message sent from the plane just before it disappeared said that the plane was losing pressure and had experienced an electrical failure.
