Default Last Titanic survivor dies at 97

    http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/W...ow/4604553.cms

LONDON: Millvina Dean, the last survivor of the 1912 sinking of the "Titanic" has died. She was 97.

Dean, who was a spinster, died in a nursing home in Hampshire on Sunday.

She was nine weeks old when the liner sank after hitting an iceberg in the early hours of 15 April 1912, on its maiden voyage from Southampton, UK.

The disaster killed 1,517 people in the north Atlantic while 706 others, including Dean, survived.

Describing Dean as an "effervescent person with a wonderful sense of humour," International Titanic Society President Charles Haas said she was a truly remarkable woman.

"It is truly the end of an era," Haas said. Elizabeth Gladys Dean, better known as Millvina, was the Titanic's youngest passenger, born on 2 February 1912.

Dean, who remembered nothing of the fateful journey, died at the care home in Hampshire where she lived, the BBC reported.

Her family had been travelling in third class to America, where they hoped to start a new life and open a tobacconist's shop in Kansas City.

Dean's mother, Georgetta, and two-year-old brother, Bert, also survived, but her father, Bertram, was among those who perished when the vessel sank.

The family returned to Southampton, where she Dean went on to spend most of her life.

Funny, as soon as I read that part of the story I laughed. So stupid.

Yeah, I think it's understood that a nine month old wouldn't remember that day.

Wild story, though. Just to think there was still a survivor from that day living in 2009. Crazy shit.

I'm a history geek so this is especially hard hitting for me. The last survivor of one of the greatest disasters of the 20th century is gone, all 706 survivors...gone.

Just imagine what will happen in the next decade with the World War II veterans...ugh.

Couldn't agree more. I'm surprised so few people have commented on this story. When you really stop and think of the significance of this story it's really something. I gotta be honest, if I had to bet money I would have guessed the last survivor died a long time ago.

Now, it's hard for me to consider a nine WEEK old a Titanic survivor, so maybe that's what's throwing me off. I guess I just think of the survivors as the adults who managed to get off the ship.

Have you ever tried to place yourself in historical moments like those? I found myself doing so after reading this--thinking about what it would have been like to be on that ship, to witness the sinking and more likely than not, die.

The same goes for Sunday, there was a nice write up on D-Day in the Detroit Free Press with some great photos of Omaha Beach and I stopped to think about what it must have been like to be there, in that moment that changed history.

Well, being the trans-Atlantic Liner buff that I am, I knew she was still alive, and have generally kept track of the survivors (until now).

Anyone who is truly interested in the moments leading up to the loss of Titanic should read Walter Lord's book on the subject. I first bought it when I was about 10 or 11 years old, and still have it.

This thing goes into the smallest details about the sinking, and has forsthand accounts from many of the passengers and crew.

It's amazing how science has unraveled several mysteries and misconceptions about the Titanic over the last 20 years or so.

woops...yeah I scimmed over the 9 weeks old bit...yeah, I guess given her age, the statement saying she had no memory was pretty pointless.

this story just reminded me of that old joke:

If a plain crashes on the border between canada and the US...where do you bury the survivors?

heeheehee...I don't know why...that just popped in my head.

Indeed. The stories, particularly of the ship breaking in two, by many of the survivors, were finally confirmed. Of course the White Star Line didn't want any of that talk to become official record, as they still had one ship of the same type (Olympic) sailing the Atlantic and another (Gigantic, which became Brittanic) still on the ways being built.

Funny, to think Jack Thayer was right all these years.
