Default Flatbed tow truck used to haul 750 pound dead women to the coroner

Obese Woman Dragged From Home, Hauled Away After Death

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Marion County Coroner's Office has come under fire after it was revealed that an obese woman was dragged from her home and hauled away on a trailer in front on family members following her death.

Teresa Smith, 48, who weighed 750 pounds, died Tuesday in her apartment on Indianapolis' northeast side.

Officials at the scene told 6News' Jack Rinehart that the deputy coroner made the decision to call a towing service remove the body from the home.

"We debated for quite a while about how we were going to get her out of there and so we finally decided, since we didn't have a van that was large enough to carry her, it was decided between (the police) department and the coroner's office to use (the truck)," said Detective Marcus Kennedy.

Smith's boyfriend and the couple's 13-year-old son, along with several neighbors, watched as Smith's body, still on her mattress, was dragged across the courtyard of the apartment complex, strapped down on the wrecker and covered with a piece of carpet.

"I think they should have handled it differently, putting her on a flatbed like they did. That was like putting a cow up there," said Smith's boyfriend, David Johnson.

Neighbors said they were also disturbed the ordeal.

"What really got me is when they took her off onto the flatbed, they threw this dirty, dirty carpet on top of her, and I just thought that was so disrespectful," said a neighbor, who did not want to be identified. "I would have never let them throw that on my loved one."

Once on the truck, Smith's body was escorted by police downtown to the coroner's office.

But would you let a loved one get to be 750 pounds? What type of alternatives did they have? Break out the chainsaws and carve her up like a beached whale?

There almost needs to be a protocol or something on how to handle these big people when they die. Like that big guy a while back that died, was being cremated and caused a damn grease fire.

    She had a boyfriend???

I agree though, there needs to be a more respectful way to deal with this. They coulda brought a big blanket or other covering, not a carpet. That's bad.

if current trends continue there will be more and more of these super obese patients.

hospitals are having to come to terms with how to transfer and transport these patients with extra wide operating tables, sturdier examination and patient beds, mechanical lifts for patients that cannot even turn themselves, larger hospital gowns, larger equipment such as open MRI's

and I have even heard of discussions amongst EMT's that there are patients in their communities that they KNOW they will not be able to remove from their homes or transport in the currently available vehicles....

how do families let their loved ones get into such a condition? once these people are too large to move themselves, shouldn't that give the family the ability to withhold all but the necessary nutrition for health?

this is waaaaaaaaaaaaaay beyond overeating and goes to the mental health not just of the obese, but of the family members who are enabling them

HOW? Huh, smart boy? How would YOU have handled it? What the hell would you have done differently to move a 750 pound sack of fat? Because that's what it amounts to.

I'm tired of this crap. It's not the coroners problem or responsibility, it's not their airlines' problems or responsibility, it's not a hospital's problem or responsibility to figure out how to handle someone "with dignity" when they themselves don't handle their lives with dignity.

There's a LOT of time between normal weight and 750 pounds. There's chunky, pudgy, overweight, fat, obese, fucking obese, jesus christ ate the cracker insanely obese and then there's 750-1000 pounds. If you haven't managed to get your shit together, and your family hasn't managed to do anything about it, well...guess what kiddoes...chances are your dead fat is going to be dragged away on a mattress covered by a carpet on a flatbed.

    That's life. Get help.
    Stay out of it, dude.

What the hell did they expect the coroners office to do with this load of a person?? For Christ's sake, the woman was 750 fucking pounds. As far as I'm concerned you throw all the rules out the window at that point and do what you have to do.
