    And Now, Some Ray Charles...

I thought about simply putting this in my paid-for "Premiere" thread, yet felt otherwise at the last moment. I was surprised (yet not entirely) that there exists no Ray Charles Appreciation-type thread here at the Links. In total honesty, I do not attempt to remedy that situation. All I'm gonna do is post some Charles clips that mean something to me. If you enjoy them, then so much the better.

These first vids come from a record Ray recorded in 1962. For a black blues/jazz artist to suddenly cover a bunch of country tunes primarily associated with white artists was simply unheard of at the time. Considering the less than wonderful racial bullshit going on at that time that continues to this very day...

    The result was this album:

And here are a handful of those tunes...

Turn up the sound, and please ignore the video...

I remember on opening night of VH's '04 tour in Greensboro, Ray had just passed away, and Sam made mention of it during his Neon Palm Acoustic Piss Break portion of the festivities. I don't remember the specific quote from Sam, I just remember thinking his acknowledgement of the great Ray Charles was a classy thing to do.

I still haven't seen the "Ray" movie, I'm slow like that (someone should do a movie called "Lou", for the late great Lou Rawls).

I'll always have a soft spot for the Ray/Clint Eastwood duet "Beers To You" from the "Any Which Way You Can" motion picture.

Ray Charles brings back some great memories. My folks had a couple of his albums on 8-track and vinyl (both country). They got quite a bit of play around our house. One time, we were all around the table playing Sheepshead and listening to Ray. Someone was dealing and my Dad was air-pianoing on the table just being silly. He then knocked over his beer which spilled on table. He then "yelled" at us by saying, "Never place a beer so close to me. I'm blind." Yeah, I know...not that funny to you guys, but it was classic and hilarious to us. Guess you had to be there.

When I retire from the Air Force, Ray's version of "America The Beautiful" will be played. That song should be our national anthem, and Ray's version should be the OFFICIAL version.

Back in the '70s at my mom's then-boyfriend's camp, there was - I believe it was an 8-track, possibly cassette - a Ray Charles album and I used to like to play "Hit The Road Jack" quite often. Can't remember if there were any other songs on there I played, but I quite liked that one then! (Still do!)

Love his bit in "The Blues Brothers", too.

I was lucky enough to see Ray live many times over the years. My parents were huge fans, and brought me to his shows very early in my life. Just another in a very long line of reasons to love and thank them.
Anyhow, I like this version of the Cash classic.

not sure if I've ever agreed with anything posted on the links more than I do with that statement.
