Default III - out of print

According to my cousin - the co-owner of a legal printing service deep in the heart of L.A. and inside info guy extraordinaire - III is officially out of print as of May 1st (and NOT January 2009). It's kinda weird to think that there's a Van Halen album that's out of print.

It's not that strange if an artist decides not to renew a release. For one reason or another, Ozzy Osbourne refuses to re-release The Ultimate Sin and the handful of live albums he put out before 2002, except for the Randy Rhoads Tribute.

Albums, even shitty albums, should never be out of print.

I just recently decided to get further into Black Sabbath than Ozzy or Dio, and getting these releases is always more difficult than just going into a record store or having it available new from Amazon. And it's always more expensive.

Yes and no. The planet is not going to suffer if that all important second "Tony Orlando And Dawn" album fails to materialize, yet what if that same cost cutting attitude dictated that an album like Miles Davis' Kinda Blue failed to see re-release? There are fans out there of all sorts of music, apparently willing to purchase even mediocre CD versions of the catalogs of unheralded artists. The fact is, these people do not make up a substantial enough windfall for companies to be bothered releasing the material as complete albums. And shocking as it sounds, these folk are not internet savvy, having access to downloadable options. As a result, they continue purchasing their music through conventional means at a store.

Labels like Rhino Records have made inroads into this "niche" mentality, offering limited releases of archival collections featuring various genres of music. Yet you still are not going to see a particular artist's entire catalog in print. And therein is the pity. Rather than discerning what makes an artist worthy through a careful examination of their work, the audience is left with handpicked "Best Of" collections that reveal no faults or miss-steps.

It ain't right. How many of us bitch about the tunes left off a VH compilation, with regard to those included? Proves the point in a nutshell, ya know?
