    Default Video cables?

It used to be so easy - white for left audio, red for right audio and yellow for video. Now there are like half a different options - HDMI, optical, coaxial, green/blue/red component video, S video - which one is the best? I bought a new CD/DVD player and the one thing I didn't take into consideration would be how I would connect it. I believe I have all of the different types of input on the back of my tv, but I'm not sure that I want to put the sound there as I don't want to have to have the TV on when I play a CD. So I might route the sound to my tuner instead. But that will probably confuse the mrs., as I usually have the tuner on when I watch a DVD, but she doesn't necessarily do that (and I'm not 100% sure that after 10 years she even knows how to properly operate the tuner!). So, can I still use the red/white to send audio to the tuner, and then is there one of the other connections that I can use to route video and sound to the television? I know S video is just video, but I'm not sure about any of the others. And again, of the various options - which one is the best?

HDMI has audio and video through it, but most players have the option to send the audio through the optical to go to a receiver as well. If you have the old red/white available on the back of the DVD player, those should be active at all times and you could hook that up to your TV, providing your TV has the option of hooking up the HDMI and analog cables to the same input.

As far as quality, best to worst:
HDMI - Carries both video and audio signal
    Component(Red/Blue/Green Cables) - Video only
    S-video - Carries video only
Composite(Yellow Cable) - Carries video only

    Audio, best to worst:
HDMI/Optical cable - Both comaprable, but I stillprefer the optical cable
Coaxial Digital - Acceptable, and most people would not know the difference from HDMI and Optical
Analog(Red/White Cables) - For digital sources, the poorest of all the options, but not a big deal if you are going to your TV, but a big issue if going to your stereo rx.

thanks. I'm going to have to go red/white to my tuner as at 20 years old, I don't think it has any other types of inputs! But then if I get an HDMI, you say, and run that to the TV, then the DVDs can play with the TV, and sound will come from the tv if that is the only thing on, or (due to the red/white connection with the tuner) also out of the tuner if that is on. Whereas for CDs, I will only need to have the tuner on. Correct?

Yep, run the HDMI to your TV and you will have the a/v for your movies going to it. When you want to spin a CD, the red/white analog cables will carry the audio to your audio receiver. Simple enough for even the wife to do it....I should know.

after verifying that my tv has the HDMI (which I'm positive it does), that is what I shall do. Thanks again.

Put some tin foil on the bunny ears and then hit the side of the tv a few times. If that does nto work have one of the kids move the bunny ears around until you get better reception.
