Default Anyone picked up the new Sterling by musicman guitars?

Just saw the ad in GuitarWorld. Looks just like an Axis, but half the price at $700. Just wondering if they are decent? They sure look good and I might be interested. Looking for feedback/input.

a friend of mine was considering one but played one at a show and has decided to find a decent used peavey wolfgang instead, he didn't like the idea of a veneer top and laquered neck.

    Laqcuered neck?!?!??

Man, had they just made those guitars with the same finish/profie as the Axis neck, that would have been one HOT axe, even despite the veneer.

    That really sucks.

it has the asymetrical neck profile of the axis (or similar) but it has the laquer on whitch is i huge dissappointment (atleast the one at the show did not sure if they all have the laquer)

If it's the same profile as the Axis then I guess you could always just remove the lacquer and give it a good tung oil or tru oil treatment. Pain in the ass but it's an option I guess. The veneer's no big deal to me, but the neck is.
I also don't care much for the licensed Floyd they have on there.
Kinda leary about the electronics too.

I dunno ... If it were the same price as the OLP it would be a no-brainer, but there's too much I don't like about it to warrant spending $700-$800.

I'd just assume buy a used Axis.

i spose as a modding project they're quite good, but some might think twice about modding an $800 guitar

Ya, especially when you can get an OLP for half the price, and sand that neck down a little on the bottom side and basically achieve the same guitar, without having to strip or sand lacquer....

I'm not crazy about the idea of a laquered neck either, but these guitars don't seem to be in the $700-$800 price range:

Street price on the AX40 is $549.00

I went and checked out one at the local music store. The lacquered neck is barely noticible. It feels pretty much like an Axis neck, even with the very thin coat of lacquer.

The neck profile is asymmetrical, but not the same as the Axis. It is comfortable though.

The electronics are not top notch, but the pickups do sound good. I would replace them, as I think most people here would, with the Tone Zone/Air Norton combo. I would also upgrade the switch and the tone pot.

The Floyd is decent, but obviously not up to the same grade as EBMM Floyds. It is better than a Floyd II, or cheap copy.

The only flaw I could find on the one AX40 that I got to see was that the neck pocket was a little too wide. There was a gap between the neck and the lower side of the neck pocket wide enough to fit a heavey pick into comfortably. Other than that, the fit and finish was pretty good.

My overall opinion of the guitar is that for $549.00, it's a good deal, and you could gig with it without modification. I would say that it is comparable to the Wolfgang EXP, but with a better looking veneer top. The best part of the guitar is the neck. Although the neck was not an exact copy of the Axis profile, the fit and finish of the neck was top notch.

It absolutely blows the OLPs out of the water, and for not much more money.

So this is kind of the EBMM Axis "EXP"? It's similar in a lot of ways--price range, finished neck when the original was not, veneer top, and lower quality hardware and electronics. Hmm... no thanks.

    I understand your point.
I really don't think it's marketed towards current EBMM owners, but more to give people who don't have the budget for a $1700 Axis and option.

I think it's competitive quality wise with other guitars in the same price range.
If my choice was between a Sub 1 and a Sterling, I would probably pick the Sub 1, but the Sub 1 was a couple hundred dollars more.

Yeah, I had one and regret selling it. But that's what we do, isn't it? It's a sickness...

I was kind of excited to hear about the AX40 coming out, but it doesn't sound like something I'd buy now. I did have an opportunity to get a Sub 1 for somewhere around $400 a few years back, and I still regret not doing it.
