Default Young kids playing tackle football

So my 10 year old has been bugging me for awhile to let him play Pop Warner football, and I've basically told him that he's not playing tackle football until he gets to high school. It's not that I'm worried about him breaking an arm or a leg or anything like that (he can find more creative ways of doing that then by playing sports, I'm sure) - in fact I look forward to him playing football (when he's older) - it's just that football, when played correctly, is a sport of collisions, and those collisions take their toll on the joints and even the brain, and I just feel at this age with all the development he has left to do, that's too much to be putting on his body. Hell, you hear of these pros who have taken so many hits over the years that they can't walk anymore or their brains are mush. It's hard enough to get a grown man to admit or accept that he has a concussion and should sit out, I can't see a kid admitting that there's something wrong when they don't see a bone sticking out. Besides, he plays baseball and he's pretty damn good at it and I think he could be good at anything he decides to play, and again, when he gets to high school, football will still be there and as long as he's been competing in something, he should be able to pick up the program fairly quickly. There's nothing stopping him from going out with his friends and passing a football around and running routes and getting the basic skills down without having to run into people or being run into by people. I know he wants to play, but I don't feel bad about it at all as I feel it's my job as parent to use what I know to help him make right choices until he's had a chance to gather enough information on his own. Anybody else that has kids playing sport (or even if you don't) have any input?

I've coached HS football for 20 years. The worst thing about Pop warner ball is the parents. At that age, they really don't run fast enough or hit hard enough to do much damage. More kids get hurt playing soccer at age 10 then those who play football.

Perhaps the most important thing is to make sure your son gets a good coach who is trying to teach your son the game and emphasizes having fun - not some asshole who is trying to relive his youth through 10 year olds.

At ten, the impacts are not that bad... My son was in full contact football at nine last season, and will return again this August... EVERY injury I ever saw was a kid tripping over his own player while running with a ball... Hardly ever did I see a kid get tackle/speared or anything that warranted injury...
He plays baseball from April-June, Football from August-November, and Hockey from November-March... AND the best part, he does this on his own... He makes ME bring him to the fields and rinks, not me making him go to the fields and rinks... This November he's also going to dabble in wrestling, as well as continue in hockey...

    Here he is in football:

the one sport I promised my son would never play would be hockey. Watching my friend's kid play (and the idiot parents in the audience) is too much for me already. You'd swear these fools think every Canadian kid is destined to make the NHL.

i was hoping you guys weren't as foolish as us.

back to the original topic, I wouldn't be a big fan of putting a 10 year old in tackle football.

Do they have any NFL Flag teams in your area? My 11 yr old son has played NFL Flag for the last 3 years (and Ive coached) and LOVES it. Its non-contact, 5 guys to a side, and is a GREAT way for them to learn all the football skills without the tackling.

I started playing around that age, it was a ton of fun. Pop Warner ain't like NFL Sunday or anything.

You have to worry more about getting stepped on or tripping over your own feet and hitting the deck, even if you do it's not a big deal. The "hitting" is pretty light to say the least. Most kids have enough trouble keeping their balance with the pads on than worrying about laying the lumber lol.

I played all the way to through high school, I don't remember a "hard" hit until my first year of HS. Even junior high football the hitting wasn't that vicious, just the odd blind side here and there.
