The New Guitar Hero "Van Halen" got me thinkin'...

Hi Folks! Long time, no posts, eh?

My kids play Guitar Hero. I think it's a great game and it introduced my kids to a lot of the great old music. Now, when I stroll to my favorite radio station, my kids recognize some of the music on there.

I think maybe GHVH will hopefully do the same to some of the younger generation out there. I hope.

But, like I said.. Got me thinkin'.

I came to the VHLinks years ago when Gary left. I was hoping Sammy would come back. The original Sammy vs Dave wars were really something then. We all had hope.
    Then VH disappeared.
    Permanently.

Yeah they had a blip on the radar with Sammy in 2004. Again with Dave last year. But that was just a couple reunion tours and it pleased all us old fans. Kinda like when our parents would go see Lynard Skynard or something.
Great bands, but no longer relevant.
Makes me sad. When I first joined VHForums in 1999 they still were big. Their popularity was dwindling, but they had a chance to stay relevant, and they squandered it.
We haven't had any real music since Balance. Yeah a few treats like Humans and MWM, etc. But its been a LONG time!
What the hell are they waiting for?! Didn't either tour get the juices flowing? Ed getting married and waiting for his son to graduate? Then call Dave? HUH?!

Now I read the comments from some of the GH Forums and the folks on there want nothing to do with it. They are insulting VH and Eddie right and left. Bugs the shit outta me. They should be pumped! Instead they say things like "Van Halen? They aren't in the same league as Aerosmith or Metalica...Who's next? Guitar Hero POISON!..."

....not in the same league as Metalica....Comparing the Mighty VH to Poison...
    *sigh*

How many more times do we need to hear about how the oppressive Raj's wore villainous black capes, crafted cunning plastic masks to impersonate people, and drained all the blood from their slaves so they could keep the fluid in bottles in their dungeons? VH aren't in the same league as them.

VH is worlds better! Personally, I think a GH game centered around them cheapens them and the entire legacy. They're not a gimmick. They were a ground-breaking and music-fucking-defining phenomenon.

I have always said that Guitar Hero is the best thing to happen to classic rock.

Everyone was freaking out about violent video games making our kids enter the world with a violent trend.

How could our kids learning to love real music be a bad thing.

2 years ago I grabbed my sons plastic "Guitar Hero" guitar and handed him my Ibanez. I told him if he wanted to be a real guitar hero he has to play a real guitar.

Tonight I walked into my home and heard him playing "Don't fear the reaper" and then "Walk" both played perfectly! Damn I wish I was that good!

Good news, I now have my Ibanez back.
Bad news, I just lost my Wolfgang.

Thing is, we here know that VH is up there with the Led Zeppelins of the world, but the general poulation doesn't seem to think so. Whereas at one time they did.

    What happened?

The band itself imploded. We all know the history, but how can a band continue to be relevant when they haven't done anything worthy of their legacy in 14 years?!

My question is what has Eddie been thinking?

In 17 years VH produced 10 epic albums. TONS of excellent songs.
You mean to tell me in 14 years we get nothing?

Now, when something that should be cool and exciting as Guitar Hero Van Halen comes out, people are shitting on it?

This game plus the Ghostbusters game might finally make me cave in and buy a system. The question is, which one? Everyone I know is pointing to XBox 360.

Anyway, this game is good for the band and their music even if it is trendy. It's proving to the general public that Van Halen is still a big part of the rock community even if they have imploded and made a joke of themselves for the past 13 years. The sad thing is, Van Halen would have only been recognized as one of the greats if something tragic happened to one of the members or they were able to completely reinvent themselves after all the shit they've put fans through. Even then, the reinvention would be temporary like Aerosmith's. Did anyone even buy Aerosmith's last album? Maybe, but I don't know anyone who did. All the band really needs to do at this point is a farewell tour that would cover each era or produce an album that sounds like Van Halen. If neither of those things happen, they may very well be lumped in with Poison, Motley Crue and Def Leppard and what the general public likes to call "hair bands." It's a shame, but their early to mid-'90's material didn't make enough of a mark for people to realize they were an evolving band that still managed to be successful after the hair metal days fizzled.

Methinks Eddie has been to and from so many dark places in his battle with the bottle that he's probably not exactly right upstairs. Unfortunately I have to agree that if he had driven his Porsche off a Malibu highway in 1996 and died, VH would have gone down in the pantheon of great rock bands. Can you imagine if Hendrix or Jim Morrison had managed to survive into their 50's? WTF do you think their lives would have turned out like? Probably a fair bit worse than Eddie's!

But he didn't die - Instead, he had to suffer through his addiction and the ensuing carnage of his personal and professional life, but with millions of us waiting, watching and expecting great things at all times. Rather than scoring porno flicks, we want another Unchained or Panama to come out of 5150 - but it ain't happening friends. After VHIII, I threw all of my high expectations out the window and looked backwards to the catalog - that's the music I grew up loving and still do! I believe that the reunion tour with Roth was the best thing we could have hoped for. If they toured to support a new album we wouldn't see much in the way of Roth-style fun VH, but darker, Eddie-as-mad-genius stuff that ain't fun to drink beer and scream along to. I love Eddie as much as the next guy on here, but just don't like the music he's written in the last 10 years as close to as much as what he did prior to '95.

    Just my two cents.

My advice is the Playstation3. It fuckin' rocks. Plus you get the Blue Ray player with it!

I disagree with the death thing. Yeah it would help in the VH legacy (God!) But it isn't necessary. Look at U2. Look at Bon Jovi. Still extremely relevant and Van Halen is WAY better than either.
Not to mention Def Leppard IMHO has taken ALL the credit for the resurgence of Heavy Metal in the 80's away from Van Halen. In part, because of Van Halen's total absence from the last 14 years...

Van Halen is all about the past now. They've just fucked too many things up since 1996.

Dave should have returned to the fold in 1996 for a true reunion. Instead we got shafted with Cherone, rumours of Dave's return post Cherone, an ill fated tour with Sammy in 2004, Ed scoring porn shortly afterward and Mike stupidly replaced by an amateur in 2007.

Now the future of the band is Guitar Hero? Rehashing their classic material and rumoured to be using a kid's likeness who wasn't even thought of when those tracks were recorded? Again

Van Halen recorded some stellar material back in their day, nothing will ever change that, however, substance abuse and ego has decayed the bands legacy. They've allowed themselves to be lumped with far lesser groups.

If this band wants to regain what little credibility it has left, the only answer is Dave/Ed/Mike and Al to record a new album and then tour it. Sadly, it's unlikely to ever happen.
“And what we have at our fingertips is arguably one of the greatest high tenor voices ever – that was in Michael Anthony. In our tiny little corner of the universe, that voice is as identifiable as the high voice in Earth, Wind & Fire, as identifiable as the high voice in the Beach Boys. Van Halen is an indelicate house blend of both – that’s intentionally. So I would always look forward to that reunion.” - David Lee Roth

They better not just put their regular "best of" shit on there. Damn, I hope they just put every song they ever released and then some. Is that asking too much??

Most of the people talking shit are just young punks who dont know any better. They probably dont hear or see VH in the press as much as Aerosmith or Metallica because they've been off the radar for so long (other than the last couple tours) so they figure VH isnt anything special, when they probably dont know much of their music or anything else about them. But like i said, I think its I just the younger people talking crap, i mean who else is gonna be hanging out in a Guitar Hero forum other than kids and teenagers?

I also recommend the Playstation 3. My whole family is addicted to LittleBigPlanet. Also God of War 3 is coming man I cannot wait for that one. 360 is good its just the 33% failure rate that scares the hell out of me.
