Default Sunday Afternoon in the Park

Did Mikey play bass on the studio version or is it just Ed and Al? I know Mike incorporated SAITP in his bass solo during the F.U.C.K. tour.

Anything recorded pre 5150 recording studio (VHI through Diver Down) is probably Mike on bass.

Once 5150 was built and Ed had an almost unlimited ability to tinker and noodle, who knows.

There are however some old pictures of Ed from the early 80's playing the bass in the studio, so maybe he did, but it seems that from what has been said by all parties involved that it was Mike on record until VHIII in which I believe Mike says he only played on four songs.

Ed could have written some of the bass lines however, we'll probably never know for sure unless one of the producers starts talking.

I wouldn't be surprised if when Edward showed the band what he was working on he already had an idea as to what the bass part would be. I am not saying he played on the albums or did not, but I believe he wrote the bass parts.

You're right. I remember an article where Ed says it's some cheapo electric piano that makes that "wurrrrrrrrrring" sound.

    Anybody back me up?...

Yes. It was an Electro Harmonix mini single ocillator keyboard with one octave. It was so cheap. I remember an article where Ed said he could'nt even bring the thing on the road because it was cheap plastic, and had a cardboard back that kept falling off. Funny stuff. Great sound on the song though. He rigged up through a stack of Marshalls.

I do vaguely recall Mike Anthony playing bits of "Sunday Afternoon..." during his bass solo, yet I'll be damned if I can remember what era.

He did it on the FUCK tour for sure. It's on RHRN. I know someone said he dabbled with it a bit on the 84 tour as well on bass, but don't recall hearing any version myself. Hmmmmmmmmm.

Ed played this live during the FW tour. It was just Ed and Al best I can recall. I am dying to see a boot of it again. I have seen so much since on boots but thats one thing I only saw live as a teenager and never again. I do remember it sounding a little cooler on record but it was very cool to see him playing it live. The Godzilla waking up sounds which is how he described it in the day sounded awesome rumbling through the Philadelphia Spectrum.

I'm trying to remember if Mike was on stage but if I had to bet on it I'd say it was just ED and AL. Also they did NOT play One Foot Out The Door afterwards. I remember that clearly and being disappointed because I love that tune as it contains one of my favorite EVH solos.

Ed was really like a mad scientist of music back then. lol It was an awesome time to be a fan.

You can find bass tabs for it online.

Maybe people are playing it on bass using their synthesizer setting on their mutli-effects pedal.

Also, in a lot of popular music the bass clef of the keyboard part matched the bass line, so maybe bands that play this (which has to be minimal) probably just play the keys part on bass.

Here's the bass tab, I recognize this guys name, he does a lot VH tabs, and obviously this is a pretty simple tab:

    Author/Artist: VAN HALEN
Title: SUNDAY AFTERNOON IN THE PARK
    Album: FAIR WARNING
    Transcribed by: RIK JONES

    GREAT BAND,GREAT SONG...GREAT JAM.

I thought it was cool when i first saw MA play it in 1991 or 92.

Didn't they go from that bass solo into "Pleasure dome"?
