    Default "cash for clunkers" legislation

First step in outlawing collector/muscle/hotrod cars??

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Barack Obama and Democratic lawmakers reached agreement on Tuesday on a legislative proposal designed to stimulate U.S. auto sales, which have fallen to near 30-year lows.

The one-year plan crafted by members of the U.S. House of Representatives would offer vouchers worth up to $4,500 for owners to replace their less fuel efficient vehicles for models that get better gas mileage.

The goal of the "cash for clunkers" legislation is to sell 1 million vehicles.

"By stimulating consumer demand for new vehicles, this proposal will directly benefit domestic autoworkers and automotive manufacturers, which have arguably been hardest hit by the current economic downturn," said Rep. John Dingell, a Michigan Democrat and staunch industry ally.

House Majority leader Steny Hoyer has embraced the proposal and said in an interview with Reuters in April that the measure would be acted upon quickly once proposed.

As much as I'd like to be upset about this, I could use $4500 towards a downpayment on a new car.

That said, this law will lead to what RUSH wrote about in Red Barcetta.

OOOH! You said gorilla. You must be racist because; inspite of the fact that giant inflatable gorillas are commonly used by car dealers nation-wide, the fact that you made refference to a gorilla and the White House where the current half-African American President lives must only be interpreted as racist. I will report this thread to Keith Olberman and you will be in deep, deep trouble.

sad thing is there probably is someone who would play the racism card, and the fact that I even thought about moving the gorilla to the capital steps. Red, yellow, black, white - Obama is the ultimate used car salesman right now!

Look, as a muscle car enthusiast, this legislation is nothing new. This kind of thing has been proposed as far back as the Clinton adm. The only reason it's gaining any kind of traction right now is that the Big 3 are in dire straights and the thought is that this leg will help them move cars.

yeah, I don't think it's necessarily an attack on classic or muscle cars as much as I think it's another wasteful government program where our tax dollars will be given to people for downpayment of their vehicles and then their old cars become the property of the government and then i guess they'll sell them at auction or whatever. It's a huge waste of time and money. Give people back their money and let them do with it as they please.
    Stay out of it, dude.

Yep, and one thing that the vast majority of these pinheads do not realize, is that the average muscle car enthusiast has their mind more in tune with their vehicles than most folks out their. They should be concentrating on the fools that have a '95 Escort where you can actually SEE the emissions coming from the tailpipe.

exactly. No one with a 68 mustang (or whatever, i don't know cars) is going to take the government up on this deal. It'll be folks with the escorts and the shit heaps...if that...because if they're driving a shit heap, they probably can't afford a monthly nut...

This bill has NOTHING to do with "outlawing" muscle cars.

Legislation like this is pretty sketchy. I can understand a buyout program where the government has a vehicle inspection, and a car or truck that is clearly beyond conceivable repair for it's bluebook value. I'm talking vehicles that are extremely rusty, (ie. broken structural members), or has a pooched engine/drivetrain. We had one up here in Vancouver during the 70's, and it worked very well. Basically, if there was a component or system in the car that posed a danger to the driver/passenger, or the general public, depending on the severity, you had, like right now to three months to get the problem rectified, before reinsuring was possible. It was a good system. It did'nt single anyone out, and it did not paint vehicles with a broad brush. There is a movement up here right now that would very much like to for a start, ban any passenger vehicle pre-86, and ban the sale or use of V8 powered passenger vehicles by 2012. Now.....let me put something in perspective. I've essentially parked my 5.0 Mustang, because fuel cost was getting quite high last summer. I've decided to do some body work on it so I've parked it till now. In the meantime, I've been driving my wife's 93' Mustang. It's a V6. It passed our VET (Aircare) with flying colours, and runs very clean. So you wanna explain to the government why this V6 model holds 20 more litres of Gasoline than my 5.0, and I'm still having to fill up once a week? The answer is power to weight ratio. There is nothing wrong with the V-8 in principle. I have to mat the V-6 to merge on the highway, where I just had to blip the throttle on my V-8 car, then cruise at 1,500 RPM. Granted these are the same people who printed a report stating that Nascar pit crews have a larger reported instance of black lung disease than coal miners. I'm still trying to figure out what a Nascar pit crew has to do with your morning commute. Although...it'd be pretty cool!
She looks so $#@!'n good ,so sexy and so frail....Somethin's got the bite on me, I'm goin' straight to Hell.
