It sounds a little creepy. There have been 2 cases identified in Kansas. Kansas... Why can we not be first to get something good, not something connected to a pandemic. I am glad school is almost out and Steph and the kids can stay home more and not be exposed...as much. Freaky

I think it's just a slow news week.

70 dead in Mexico has more to do with their healthcare system than it does the flu strain itself.

From what I understand, the strain of flu in Mexico is a variant on one that has popped up in California and Texas. That one is a combo of what appears to be human and swine flu. Human to human contagion, since none of those infected had had any contact with pigs.

The Mexican one also appears to have a little bird flu mixed in and the scary thing is that it appears to be more dangerous to the young and healthy with a mortality rate of anywhere between 5 - 8 %, which is extremely high.

The thing that is scariest is this: Several months ago, a flu vaccine, made by a company called Baxters, was exported from the US to the Czech Republic. This went to a disease control laboratory ready to be shipped to eight or nine European countries. The Czech scientists did a short test and the results were a few dead ferrets so they analysed the vaccine and found out that, mixed in with the vaccine, was H5N1 active virus - yep, the Avian flu. This made headlines in all the Czech press, a lot of questions about how a vaccine could become mixed with a lethal virus, but did not seem to appear in any other country's media. Conspiracy theories abound of course, but even ignoring the method by which these two were mixed, it does beg the question, was there a flu vaccination programme in Mexico and if so, which company was responsible? Regardless, all agree that this is a strain that has never been seen before.

Most scientists agree that massive loss of life is far more likely from a virus than war, natural disaster etc and that with "the next pandemic", it is always a case of when, not if. Can't remember the final death toll from the Spanish flu, 50 or 80 million was it? but that was almost a century ago. We're a little better at getting around the world quickly these days.

I don't lay awake at night worrying about these things but if a few cases crop up in Germany, I shall be staying indoors a lot more.

Yes, except, I personally believe that the top dogs at the pharmaceuticals are actually otters (spits on the floor in contempt) in disguise, therefore ... Not going to happen.

On a less serious note: There are now cases in New Zealand too. Group of school kids who went to Mexico, arrived home in a bit of a state.

Watch this one carefully people, and don't just watch the mainstream press on this; there are ALWAYS advisories issued that may not be in one's best interests. Eyes and ears etc.

If one believes the stuff that is written in the "Have Your Say" deal on BBC's site, it does sound somewhat ominous.
