For SuckaInA3Piece And Me: Gentlemen Of Leisure

Not exactly who the hell is on bass here. According to the VH Boots site, this may be a Mammoth demo recording. This recording could possibly date from as early as 1973.

Whatever, in any event this tune is a very brief, highly rhythmic and pounding Eddie Van Halen riff, played at a fast tempo. It recalls the work of a group lead by bassist Glenn Hughes, known as Trapeze. And of course, the guitar solo rips.

Sucka and I both dig this tune, so here's to you my friend.

For such an old demo of questionable quality, that tone is fucking killer.

Thanks Chef! To my ear, I hear a bit of a "Rock n Roll Hoochie Koo" vibe going on in the riff and solo.

Just for conversational purposes, as the information could be completely inaccurate, but I have read several times that Roth joined in 1974, and then Michael Anthony later that same year.

If correct, this would have to be 1974 at the earliest.

Have heard it before, and I find it interesting that the song ends with the same kind of "explosion" sound that many of their demos/boots have.

    Thanks for sharing!
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

The actual song doesn't end with that explosion sound. That mp3 came from Roth's official site. Years ago, Roth's webmaster took a few old VH demos, cut off the last half the songs, and then tacked on that explosion sound where the songs got cut off. This song and "Glitter" are the two oldest VH songs that have circulated.

Poorly worded on my part, I knew it wasn't part of the song. So the Roth Army added the little explosions on the end? Never knew that, always wondered where that came from, thought that was maybe VH's way of marking it as a demo.

But my understanding of Glitter is that it is from the 1984 sessions. Is that incorrect?

I have it, and to my ears there is no way it is a pre-VHI recording.

The Roth Army and Dave's site are two different entities. Believe it or not, at one time Roth had a fairly decent site, not the mere photo collection that it is reduced to today.

A lot of stuff is still there on Roth's site, just can't get to it if you try and go in the front door.

To me, "Glitter" sounds very much like mid-'70's Van Halen - years before their first album. That's how they sounded back then. I'd have to disagree and say that everything about it sounds like a pre-Van Halen 1 recording.
