47 Year Old Spinster Becomes Overnight Internet Star

Yeah, I was cynical about this story as well...until I heard this woman sing. At the bottom of this post is a clip from Youtube. After viewing it, you tell me if you are not moved. (For one reason or another, EVERY version of this clip is non-embeddable.)

'Never-Been-Kissed' 47-Year-Old Singer Becomes Internet Sensation

    Thursday , April 16, 2009

Susan Boyle is unassuming, unemployed, and not only is she unmarried, the 47-year-old says she's never been kissed.

Not quite what you'd expect from Britain's new singing sensation.

The Scottish church singer has become a smash Internet hit since wowing a cynical audience and judge Simon Cowell in the first episode of the new "Britain’s Got Talent" series.

Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore even wrote to each other about the performance on Twitter, reports the London Times, with Kutcher tweeting: “This just made my night," and Moore replying: “You saw it made me teary!"

Boyle was initially greeted with scornful looks after confessing she lived with her cat and had never been kissed, but her rendition of "I Dreamed a Dream" from the musical "Les Miserables," earned her a rare standing ovation.

Boyle is now considered a favorite to win the competition whose prize includes the equivalent of about $147,000 and a chance to sing for the Queen.

Cowell is also reportedly organizing a record deal for her, the Times reported.

What, no bitching about Fox News? You people are slipping.

    Ashton and Demi are weird.

When Simon showed that goofy smile/look of childish bewilderment, I wondered for a moment if this whole thing is fake.

I've concluded that Susan Boyle is awesome, and once again, you can't judge a book by looking at the cover.

You know...if I was thinking about going on the show this season, I would probably bail and come back again next year.

I don't follow American Idol or any "reality show" for that matter, but I will be keeping tabs on this one.

Of course......actual TALENT is worth following. Hopefully this will pave the way for real performers to start getting their due again instead of the mediocrity-worship we have now.

That clip BTW was farkin awesome!

I brought this up in the American Idol thread earlier this week when I saw the story on Yahoo. The lady can sing her ass off and I'm more impressed by her than any of the people that have come out of that show. She's an incredible example of the fact that there are millions of incredibly talented people that hardly ever get noticed. Glad she did. I hope she's able to parlay this into a gig in musical theater.
    Stay out of it, dude.

I saw her story on CNN this morning. Bravo to her. To echo Lowlife, nice to see someone with genuine talent that doesnt' fit the mold of the mediocre prefab crap that is what the hitmakers behind these talent shows are looking for.
