    Default John Madden Retires

Legendary NFL broadcaster John Madden retires

    BY Bob Raissman
    DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

    Updated Thursday, April 16th 2009, 10:15 AM

John Madden, the most recognized analyst in television sports, is calling it quits. In a statement issued Thursday morning, Madden, who was NBC's No. 1 NFL analyst on the Peacock's Sunday night package, said: "It's time. I'm 73 years old...It's been such a great ride...the NFL has been my life for more than 40 years, it has been my passion - it still is. I appreciate all of the people who are and were such an important part of the most enjoyable, most fun anyone could have...It's still fun and that's what makes it hard and that's why it took me a few months to make a decision."

There was some speculation last season concerning Madden's future when he missed one game. At that time, NBC Sports boss Dick Ebersol said Madden just needed a brief rest.

Ebersol said he spent all day Wednesday with Madden at his Bay area home. "I treied every way I could to make sure he was sure about his decision," Ebersol said. "And in true John Madden fashion, he was sure."

Madden, who coached the Oakland Raiders to seven AFC Western Division titles and a win over the Vikings, in Super Bowl XI, started his broadcasting career at CBS. He also worked with Fox and ABC on "Monday Night Football."

His likely replacement at NBC will be Cris Collinsworth.

The guy made the game fun to watch. He really seemed like a regular guy compared to the schmucks you usually get to hear. A typical football fan even though he knew an awful lot about the game. Great coach too. Maybe he had slipped a bit in recent years. Still, one of the best ever. Thanks John!

    There goes Frank Caliendo's career!

Wonder if the fact that Harry Kalas, who was also 73, is no longer with us had anything to do with the decision?

Never liked John as a coach. In fact his offensive line held so much I think thats what made the NFL change the rules on offensive holding and allowed the OL to grab the jersey. In the broadcast booth he was stellar. I think Dick Ebersol needs to retire too. Chris Collinsworth suks as a analyist,or anything.

Madden has not been on MNF for several years now, Ace.

Well, with Favre retired, John couldn't find a new NFL player's ass to kiss. Loved him in the booth, but the Favre man-crush made me cringe.

He was appallingly bad, wasn't he? Listening to him second guess Collinsworth, petulantly disagree and be consistently wrong about everything all the time made those NFL Network games unbearable.

Not only is he bad (and he is), but he calls the games like he's calling a session of congress. No emotion, straight monotone.

Collingsworth, I actually like. Or maybe it's just that Gumbel makes him look and sound good.

I always kinda liked Madden, even in his outlandishness. I loved how he was fine with poking fun at himself and how he didn't seem to take himself very seriously. Guys like that are hard to come by, especially in sports broadcasting and print media.

I loved his bit in The Replacements. He was awesome.
    Stay out of it, dude.
