Default Turntables: The vinyl worshippers thread!

What with vinyl actaully becoming more popular in this day and age, and even Chickenfoot releasing their new album on vinyl, I thought it only proper to give the forgotten turntable it's own thread. I know there are quite a few Linkers who still worship the wax, so let's hear from you!

I'm currently using an old Technics 1200 Mk II that I got from the roller rink I used to work at since they had converted to CD's.

It's far from the best table I've owned, but does a commendable job. Now, if receiver and pre-amp manufacturers would only add MM and MC inputs back to their products, I'd be really happy.

Mods: I debated on whether to put this in here or in Music, but I figured since the iPod stuff was in here, a turntable thread would belong here as well.

I remember when I got rid of all of my vinyl to convert to CD's..... boy, I wish I had that day back.

Anyways, I am now in the process of buying all of the the albums I USED to have back on vinyl. It sounds SOOOOOO much better!!! Full and rich sound that can not be duplicated by any modern means. To this day, I do not own an iPod and never will....

My Technics SL-D20 is still in service as it has been since I got it for graduating college in 1984 (and there's LowLife saying none of his iPods have lasted 5 years!). Could use a new stylus, but since I don't play records that often, it hasn't been a priority. I have never been really able to tell the difference between my vinyl records and their replacements but I certainly don't miss the "pops" that some records would have, either by age or accident, some right out of the wrapper. I still hear a "pop" during the quiet section between "Foreplay" and "Long Time" on the Boston album, even though that particular piece of vinyl has been retired for years! Also don't miss having to get up and flip the disc every 15 minutes when playing those Van Halen albums! I do miss the fullsized 12" artwork, though.

I've really been enjoying Don McLean's American Pie album on my turntable...American Pie, Vincent...the whole first side is just incredible and does not sound good on any format other than vinyl.
    Stay out of it, dude.

If you don't already have it, try and get ahold of Billy Thorpe's Children of the Sun album, it is simply mind blowing on vinyl!

never even heard of it...is it mcleanish?

I'm on two big musical kicks right now: 1. folky stuff and old honky tonk and 2. early to mid nineties grunge and rock. Both, sound great on vinyl. I can't wait to get Pearl Jam's Ten box set including the vinyl copies.

Not really, and classifying the entire album is kind of hard. There are a lot of stereo effects on the album which sound super cool on vinyl when compared to the CD version.

Try this, the title track, and I think you'll see what I mean, and then imagine the warmth of the tones on a vinyl disc.

The classic Dual 1219 turntable my Father has owned forever, has the most incredible sound. Heavy 6.8 lb. platter. Very ahead of it's time with all it's features and tonearm suspension. Has virtually no rumble. I too have a Techniques, turntable, and have had a few others, like a Denon, and a Pioneer, and none have ever come close to that old beauty! If I could find another, I'd snap it up in a heartbeat.

Had an old Dual that I sold after I bought my SOTA, it was truly the best table I owned save for the SOTA that replaced it. I've seen a few SOTA tables showing up at pawn shops recently and have considered picking one up....the worst table they ever made is far superior to about 90% of the stuff that has ever been made.

Well, this just sucks balls. Got a call this morning and it turns out to be the storage place where I keep most of my vinyl at, and they procede to tell me that the unit has been broken into and everything is gone. They also go on to tell me that there was no sign of forced entry at the main door to the building or the units that were hit...sounds like an inside job to me. The manager of the place has asked for a list of everything that was in there, problem is, I never made a master list of my collection, so this is going to be tough.

Yep, and trying to remember the titles of 600+ albums, including a lot of boots and imports, is hard enough....remembering all the titles to all of the 45's I had in there is darn near impossible.
