Default my opinion of the EVH frankenstein pickup..

well i love the pickup.it sounds like his old sound.it may or may not be an exact copy of the pickup in his original guitar, but it does sound like his old classic sound.it has about the same output as a PAF but its fuller sounding than a PAF,fully bodied sounding.plays great through an old plexi or the new 5153 amp..one thing i did notice it seems to require a ash body to get his tone,it just doesnt work in an alder body at all.those are the only two woods i have tried thus far.i tend to prefer the pickup close to the strings, for its extra bite and output.here is a clip i did with my plexi, the first part is the amp slaved(low volume),the second part is the amp with an attenuator at loud volume.i got to say i love this pickup.the pickup is replacing my ibanez super 70 pickup, which is my second choice for his vintage tone..

I tough this new Pup was in the 13 to 14k output?...is it lower then that?..Oh and on what guitar did you put it on? the clip sounds greath, but does sound a little hotter then a Paf wich is what i use on mine.

what amp are you playing trough?..any FX?

mine reads at 14.2k on the meter, but playing it next to a duncan 59 it has the same amout of output.even though it reads 14.2k,its not a hot output.im using a swamp ash divebomb franky guitar.i dont think it will do VH that well in a darker sounding wood than ash.

at 14k it's about double what a real paf's output, but in anycase...if you're satified...that is ALL that count realy..

I've got two in two different alder bodied guitars and that is one of the sweetest pickups known to man...

you cant judge pickup output by what it reads on a meter, its not the same thing.

The DC resistance of a pickup really gives no indication to it's output.... you can have a 8K pickup that is way hotter than a 14K pickup....

A pickup is an AC device, like a speaker....

I dont give a shit what it sounds like.
No pup is worth spendin all that cabbage. IMO.
Not when I can get just as good or, from puplic opinion, better for half the price.
Not trying to sound like a dick, but this EVH endorced stuff is just outta hand.

I've had mine for about two-a-half weeks now.

I chose to install it in my "Blue Franky" which is heavy one-piece Northern Ash.

    Here's a "pre-installation" shot...

...you can clearly see the "battle damage" that was inflicted upon it by the Semouy Duncan Custom Shop personnel!

Just for laughs, let's measure it, shall we?...

OH my God!!! the legend is true, it really does read "0"!!!

No, no, of course it doesn't! It comes in at about 14K+, as advertised!

Installation complete and ready for extensive sonic testing...

I will say this- this pick-up simply sounds amazing and it keeps getting better and better. Call me nuts, but I believe that a pick-up has a "break-in" period.
To my ears the EVH Frankenstein has all of the sweet midrange of the Seymour Duncan sh-11 Custom Custom and the warm, clear crunch of the Seymour Duncan '78. The harmomics punch through with complete clarity. Fully opened up, it roars like a sports car accelerating on an open highway, turned down, it generates a well-defined clear tone.
Bottom line- the "Blue Franky" and I are happy no, deliriously happy... can you see the smile on her face?
