    Default Carvin Guitars?

Hi folks - I'm a MusicMan head as far as guitars go, but after spending some time watching Jason Beckers Hotlicks DVD (one of the saddest stories I've seen) - I'm curious on Carvin guitars as I've always heard good stories about them.

Anybody here got one - What are they like?

    Cheers all!

Al: I make my living by viciously attacking something
    Mike: ...actually I don't drink.
    Sammy: Are these yours Eddie?
Dave: Look at that ankle - dirty girl!

I have never played a Carvin; but if their guitars are ANYTHING like their Pro Audio rack cases, I would not hesitate to buy one. My buddy who is a vintage guitar dealer likes them well enough, though I don't think he would put much money into a used one. The only negative I have heard is more of an issue with their necks being kinda thin for the "shredder" feel. I don't know if they are Ibanez thin, but I would ask for a detailed description of their necks (any comparisons to other neck profiles) and go from there. But their quality is top-notch.

One of the guys who run our rehearsal space ordered a California Special around Christmas. It's a real sweet guitar. Beautiful natural quilt top. Looks like a Paul, but sounds alot like like a PRS McCarty, with great definition. The neck is a super fast satin finish, and feels balanced. Great sustain. Top notch parts too. The selector has a real positive detent, and the volume/tones are smooth without too much friction, but don't feel as "cheap" as the low friction pots. All in all a great guitar. I know it sounds like a shill, but alot of manufacturers could take a lesson from Carvin, at least on this guitar.

I have a DC127 with a floyd and love it. Very comfortable to play. The neck is not as thin as an ibanez. They have options for the fretboard radius. I just got all the basics except made the body mahogany. I can get les paul types of tones out of it and then with the coil taps on each pickup I get great strat tones. Probably the best coil tap I've heard. I was originally going to swap out the carvin pickups for some dimarzios but the carvin pickups sound great. I don't planning on buying any other guitars but carvins from now on.

My pop has this one (DC 127) except made of koa & hard rock maple with tung oil finish, neck-thru-body, black satin hardware and coil taps for single coil tones:

    It's a SMOKIN' guitar.

The neck IS pretty thin but not Wizard or Wizard II thin.

Their axes are definitely top-notch, especially for the price.
    I HIGHLY recommend them.

...and their monitors rock, as well.

Carvin, like all the other major companies, make crap and they make incredible stuff too. I think their mid to high end gear is as good or better than anyone else's within the same price points. They make some really really pretty guitars and basses too...as the photos in this thread testify.

I am under the impression that for years Carvin made pretty much all of the Asian made stuff for Yamaha, Fender, Epiphone, and Washburn...that they had these factories in Korea and China that took orders from the other companies and would turn out product in addition to the Carvin branded gear.
    Stay out of it, dude.

I have a bolt kit. The electronics that came with it sucked but the guitar itself is very nice. I loaded it with SD 59s but am thinking about loading it with Texas Specials.
As for Carvin's electronic gear (amps, PA, etc)... I don't like it.

I have two Carvin Basses that I've had for about 15 years and they still play great look great and sound great. Both a 5 strings one is frettless and like I said never had a problem with either. Never bought a guitar but I've been tempted on a few occasions. Don't know now how the quality stands up to others but 15 years ago I got a lot of bass for the money.

Yeah I'm right there with you...i've always felt their amps and pro audio gear left more than a little to be desired. At their price points there are a lot of better options.
