Default Brown University Kills 'Columbus Day' for 'Fall Weekend'

"Fall Weekend" will be taking the place of the holiday formerly known as "Columbus Day" at Brown University this fall.

The faculty of the Ivy League university voted at a meeting Tuesday to establish a new academic and administrative holiday in October called "Fall Weekend" that coincides with Columbus Day, but that doesn't bear the name of the explorer.

Hundreds of Brown students had asked the Providence, R.I. school to stop observing Columbus Day, saying Christopher Columbus's violent treatment of Native Americans he encountered was inconsistent with Brown's values.

"I'm very pleased," Reiko Koyama, a sophomore who led the effort, told the student newspaper, the Brown Daily Herald. "It's been a long time coming."

The change will take effect this fall.

Although the students had asked the school to take another day off instead, Brown will remain closed on Columbus Day, in part to avoid inconveniencing staff whose children might have the holiday off, the Daily Herald reported.

Many other colleges are open on Columbus Day but give students short breaks later in the semester.

Last month a Brown Daily Herald poll found two-thirds of the students supported changing the holiday's name to Fall Weekend, the newspaper reported.

People can debate it all they want, but in this context it's a perfectly legitimate point to make. All the patriotism and nationalistic beliefs in the world can't hide the absolutely despicable things that the European settlers, and our subsequent governments in the States and Canada, have done to indigenous peoples. Besides, it's a day for a guy who stumbled upon the wrong country

However you wanna look at it, it's not a big deal to me at all.

I guess we shouldn't celebrate July 4th then either, because we had slavery in our Constitution. We shouldn't acknowledge George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, or any other President until Lincoln because of their role in being complicit with slavery. That would pretty much eliminate President's day altogether.

If they are so full of righteous indignation, maybe they should ask for a service day to highlight Native American plight instead of getting drunk over a long weekend.

    Fucking yuppy bullshit.

My people - its like a motion picture
Ya push it and push it
    Youre pushed into believing

My people - were pushed into extinction
    Push over move over
Your place in time is over

    Liar liar
Learning from the book of lies
Keeps you feeling good and blind
    Liar liar
And if you want the only truth
    Its buried under foot

    Put on your war paint
Cause here they come to claim your home
    And claim your mother earth
    Put on your war paint
Cause here they come to change your god
    And crush your own beliefs

Columbus - our favorite nations hero
    He torchered and murdered
The people that once saved him

Columbus - went home his countries failure
    In shackles a criminal
    And yet we celebrate him

    Thanksgiving - a touching celebration
    Share everything with you
Before we have to kill you

    Liar liar
    Cause history is his story
    Its buried underfoot

    Put on your war paint
Cause here they come to claim your home
    And claim your mother earth
    Put on your war paint
Cause here they come to change your god
    And crush your own beliefs
    Put on your war paint
Cause here they come to spread their lies
    And leave you with disease

That's awesome. I've always thought Columbus Day was akin to Germany having Eichmann Day. Why do we celebrate the monsters of our society.

"You may recognize some of these chemicals. Let's start with cyanide...The one the Aum Shinrikyo cult attempted to use to commit mass murder in a Tokyo subway in May 1995...The same cyanide produced routinely--1.4 million tons per year--for use in the production of plastics, adhesives, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and so on. It seems that those who put small amounts of cyanide in subways are terrorists. But those who produce it in mass quantities and contaminate broad reaches of soil, water, and air, killing countless living beings, are not terrorists, but rather capitalists, and are counted among the finest and most powerful people on the planet."

I'm about the least politically correct person anyone will meet.

I don't really see a connection between political correctness and thinking columbus day is retarded. I know some see it that way but I don't.

I don't see any reason to celebrate a man who died a pathetic, broke bastard who continued to refuse to admit he didn't land in India. He was a fool. I don't think we should celebrate a big doofus who really didn't accomplish anything.

He wasn't even the first European to land in the Americas!!!

He certainly wasn't the first person here.

He was a pathetic, bitter, little man who did in fact torture and murder thousands of indigenous people and infected them with disease. He insisted he landed in India and was so dumb he refused to admit otherwise even though people were telling him he had discovered an entirely new continent because doing so would mean he would admit to a horrific miscalculation of the size of the earth and oceans.

The guy is a loser and there is simply no reason to celebrate him. It has nothing to do with political correctness and everything to do with having some standards in terms of who we're going to celebrate and why we're going to honour them.
    Stay out of it, dude.

There may have been other Europeans that landed here first, but Columbus is credited with the true discovery because there were actually settlements that followed, which lead to us all being here.

Sure he was a flawed person, but I think the day isn't so much to honor the person as it is his discovery. It's just a lot easier to call it "Columbus Day" rather than "Not the first European to discover but the one who made this all possible Day."

I just don't feel this is important enough to warrant action.

So why not re-name it for the Italian-Americans?

Why is it okay to fuck them out of a holiday?

There isn't a single American who posts on this board who doesn't have blood on their lineage, if you go back far enough your ancestors did some really shitty things to their fellow man.

Oh, and can someone explain to me how what Columbus was somehow worse than what the Aztecs and the Mayans were doing in the same region at the same time? Why do they get a pass? Shit, we should ban Cinco de Mayo celebrations too, right? I mean we have to be consistant, we have to be fair.

Oh, and I fully expect Brown University to cut a check to the indigenous peoples who's land their university currently oppresses, at current market value. I mean, they wouldn't want to look like a bunch of sanctimonious hippocrates now would they?
