I have a live bootleg of Anvil. They were pretty cool back in the day. They, along with the likes of Raven and Helloween were not heavy enough to be "Thrash" and get caught up in that groundswell and were certainly not pretty enough to be part of the MTV-friendly 80's schlock-Metal. Thus, they were kind of left out in the cold, popularity-wise.

I'm really looking forward to seeing this film. Looks like I'll have to wait for the DVD as its not opening anywhere close to Cincinnati. Some of those clips almost brings tears to my eyes.

They were recently on That Metal Show, they seemed like good guys, I heard on the radio today that Priest picked them up as their opening act for their summer tour.

I was happy to hear it, as it seems they have struggled for quite a while.

    Default VH Connection

I downloaded a podcast of Eddie Trunk interviewing Lips and Reiner of Anvil. There was one less-than-flattering Van Halen reference, a Michael Anthony reference in particular.

The topic was how, back in the early 80's when Anvil was seemingly on their way up in popularity, they were pretty cool to their fans (including one that would become the director of this movie). Trunk asked Lips why he was so cool to the fans. Lips replied with a story about seeing Black Sabbath and Van Halen on that infamous tour.

Lips was backstage and said that Sabbath were as cool as could be. To contrast that, Michael Anthony of VH was, according to Lips, a prick, saying "See these boots? They cost $1500 dollars! Wouldn't you like to be in them?". Lips said that he was so turned off by the ego maniac Rock star attitude that he swore he would never be that way. Of course, he never became that big but I find it interesting that Mike would have been such a jerk. To be fair, I imagine all of VH where assholes at some point when they were rising to superstardom. (Of course, some could argue that they still are assholes but that's for another forum).

Even if Mike Anthony was like that, c'mon, that was 1978 and he was what, early 20's? He seems to have become a great guy. Most of us men go through an absolute asshole phase in our life, it just whether you snap out of it or not.

If you made a list of all the asshole things I said in my late teens and early 20's it would be enough to fill a book.

Mike might have been absolutely shit faced when he said it as well.

so what is this Anvil thing? It is a mockumentary thing like Spinal Tap or were they an actual band? What story do they have to tell?
    Stay out of it, dude.

To go further, Mike HIMSELF has admitted to having this attitude back in the day. In an interview he told the magazine he had invited his parents to his hotel room on tour and started thrashing a few lamps and other things in the room. Then turned to them, as they were watching with a shocked look on their face, saying "see, I can afford to destroy things, I've made it!"

Mike of 1978 can't be compared to Mike of now. And how would YOU behave if you became a big rock star overnight? No one can tell for sure.

Ditto, I've never heard of them, and just the name alone had me thinking this is some kind of gag.

Anvil is an actual band that have been around for ages. They are from Canada and were poised for success in the early 80's. They weren't Thrash but were considered an influence. I have an old live bootleg of theirs. They weren't one of my faves but they were cool. They never did get successful and, in fact, faded into obscruity though they continued on as band all these years. The documentary was directed by a now-successful Hollywood screenwriter who was a big fan of theirs back in the day.

From the reviews I've read, the movie is equal parts humorous (50-something Rockers are always funny) and touching. I really want to watch this (regardless of Lips' impression of Mike).

Metal on Metal was probably their biggest song.

I think this was mentioned earlier and it is dead on, not heavy enough to be considered a thrash band, but not pretty enough for MTV.

They just didn't fit the time. Pretty simple, straight forward music, but they seem like cool guys.

Any musicians near Boston / Cape Cod want to get together and play some VH? I play drums, guitar, keyboard, bass, and I sing. I want to start a VH tribute band. Contact me if interested.

Good for AC/DC to take them out.

I am still waiting on all these bands that talk about how much Anvil influenced them to give them a hand up and take them out on tour.
