Default Housing Issues Literally Making People Sick, The Reason? CHINESE DRYWALL

As if the housing market doesn't suck badly enough nationwide, now people that bought houses years ago are experiencing utterly bizarre situations in Florida such as appliances shorting out, nose bleeds or other sickness and an odd odor.

Normally I'd bury this in the "Only In Florida" thread, yet it appears the issue concerns several other states as well. From this morning's Sun Sentinel.

Uproar over Chinese drywall; Floridians say it's making them ill and hurting home values

Homeowners claim the drywall is causing health problems, including nosebleeds, headaches and sore throats.
    By Paul Owers

    South Florida Sun-sentinel

    April 2, 2009

Homeowners in Florida and other states are mounting a charge against defective Chinese drywall, saying it's making them sick and damaging their homes built during the housing boom.

As many as 36,000 homes in Florida and 100,000 nationwide may contain the imported wallboard, which can give off a sulfurous "rotten egg" odor, tarnish metals and ruin appliances and electronics by corroding pipes and wires.

Homeowners claim the drywall is causing health problems, including nosebleeds, headaches and sore throats.

Most complaints involve homes built from 2002 to 2006 during a building surge that caused a shortage of materials and resulted in builders using imports.

The Florida Department of Health has logged more than 100 complaints, including some from residents of Broward and Palm Beach counties. Lawsuits are sprouting in Florida, Alabama and Louisiana, and people in Mississippi, Virginia and California also have reported problems.
The health department has tested Chinese drywall and said last month that it did give off a sulfur smell when exposed to heat. An American-made drywall sample didn't.

But the agency said it needs to conduct further tests over the next several months to determine whether the Asian wallboard poses a health threat.

While many homeowners in Florida and beyond suspect their properties contain the bad drywall, they have yet to prove it. In some cases, water is to blame rather than the drywall, said Jack Snider, principal of a Fort Myers environmental consulting firm that has tested homes in Florida.

Still, the drywall uproar is resonating in Washington.

U.S. Sens. Bill Nelson, D-Fla, and Mary Landrieu, D-La., proposed legislation Monday, asking for a recall and an immediate ban on tainted building products from China.

"This appears to be a fairly severe problem," said Chris Day, a spokesman for Nelson. "People's entire lives are in their homes."

Scott Semrau says his house in the Vizcaya community west of Delray Beach has the classic symptoms of Chinese drywall -- a rotten-egg smell, a tarnished silver set and failing air conditioning coils that contain black residue. He's on his third microwave oven, and his wife, Deborah, is developing severe allergies.

Semrau said he complained to the builder, Centerline Homes, but the Coral Springs company isn't taking action. In a statement to the Sun Sentinel, the builder said it never knowingly allowed subcontractors to use deficient or defective drywall and that it has made unspecified repairs to "several" homes in another unnamed community.

"Centerline Homes will continue to become further educated on [Chinese drywall] so that it can appropriately and efficiently address the needs of its customers," according to the statement.

Semrau began noticing the problems within a year of moving into his new house in early 2002. Although officials think much of the drywall came into the country in 2004 or later, the state health department acknowledges that some of the drywall may have been used here before then.

Like other residents who think their homes have been compromised, Semrau, 59, is worried about the value of his property, which already has taken a hit during the housing bust.

"I don't like litigation, but I don't see a whole lot of options at this point," he said.

    interesting.

Perhaps these cases of tainted products from china are not a coincidence or a product of poor quality control...maybe they're trying to kill us off. hmmm...I'm sure there's a conspiracy website tackling this as we speak!

Saw a bit of this on the local news about 3 weeks ago. According to the story, it seemed most of the homes with the questionable drywall were built in 05 and 06. Friend of mine in the construction business said not to assume you have stuff made here in the US even if it was a US brand, as some of those companies bought the Chinese stuff and sold it as their own.

According to the article, the suppliers were complying with Chinese law by putting their own name on the product. HUH?

After spending years in the construction trade, I can tell you that the only time a drywall shortage occurs, it is not because of a lack of materials are available to create it, it is because manufacturers failed to anticipate the need. The Chinese crap was imported by U.S. distributers for one of two reasons: Either there was a "shortage" and it was used to fill orders, or the junk was cheaper to import than to create stateside. And if the latter is the case, then this sets a precedent that is unhealthy in many ways.

This really scares me. So much of this Chinese stuff is complete sub standard crap. Being in the welding field, Iv'e run into truly awful steel. I was making some framework for our shop. I went down to my supplier and picked up some 2"X3" box and angle iron for reinforcing purposes. Well, building the main frames was a breeze. Welded up beautifully as most Canadian or U.S. made steel does. Well here's where it went south. Time to start bracing once the frames were levelled on the shop floor. I bucked up and Chamfered all the angles (did I mention this was the steel made in China?) Upon welding, the steel basically started to completely liquify, blowout, and had a very sulferous oder and crusted yellow. Even though i was in a ventilated area the room filled with smoke, and the metal, get this, was actually flaming with the torch removed. My eyes were watering, and I started gagging from the fumes. It was a horror show! I was so surprised that anything like this could meet certification. When I read this about the drywall, it just jogged this memory. Sulfer is often used apparently as a filler. There is typically small amounts of sulfer it pot metal, (stuff like car emblems, and knobs and switches) but not large amounts in structural steel, or drywall! Unbelievable! I always double check where my product comes from. If it's Chinese, and that's all they have, I tell them I'll wait to get in some North American product in. Period!

Just a little population control. They already kill alot of their own, and are just branching out. Maybe they have a benevolent agenda.

I just read an article on this product in a industry magazine. Sounds like it is mainly found in Florida.

what exactly is "drywall." I mean I know "what" it in-so-much as what it's purpose is and what it looks like but what is it? it looks like a bunch of chalk dust compressed and turned into huge boards. What was used in its place before it came along? How long has it been used?

it's main ingredient is gypsum. It's a mined mineral, that also provides moderate flame resistance. It gained popularity in the 60's but had begun use in the late 50's in commercial applications. Plaster and lath (wooden strips that the plaster was spread over) was the previous standard method. Drywall gained favor as it's extremely quick to install, and is significantly less expensive due to eliminating all the steps in first installing all the lath, then the multiple applications of plaster, sanding, top coating, then resanding.

This is a shot where you can see the lath exposed in a damaged area of the plaster.
