WTF! - 9 patients made nearly 2,700 ER visits in Texas

AUSTIN, Texas – Just nine people accounted for nearly 2,700 of the emergency room visits in the Austin area during the past six years at a cost of $3 million to taxpayers and others, according to a report.

The patients went to hospital emergency rooms 2,678 times from 2003 through 2008, said the report from the nonprofit Integrated Care Collaboration, a group of health care providers who care for low-income and uninsured patients.

"What we're really trying to do is find out who's using our emergency rooms ... and find solutions," said Ann Kitchen, executive director of the group, which presented the report last week to the Travis County Healthcare District board.

The average emergency room visit costs $1,000. Hospitals and taxpayers paid the bill through government programs such as Medicare and Medicaid, Kitchen said.

Eight of the nine patients have drug abuse problems, seven were diagnosed with mental health issues and three were homeless. Five are women whose average age is 40, and four are men whose average age is 50, the report said, the Austin American-Statesman reported Wednesday.

"It's a pretty significant issue," said Dr. Christopher Ziebell, chief of the emergency department at University Medical Center at Brackenridge, which has the busiest ERs in the area.

Solutions include referring some frequent users to mental health programs or primary care doctors for future care, Ziebell said.

"They have a variety of complaints," he said. With mental illness, "a lot of anxiety manifests as chest pain."

I had to take my son to the ER yesterday for the third time in the past four years, guess we have a long way to go to catch these guys.

That equals out to somewhere around one ER visit per week for each of them. I work in a pharmacy, and we see dozens of people that use the ER as their primary care physician. Many of them go once a week or more. Oh, on Medicaid, of course.

I know in canada that if a person goes to emerg with a non-emergency case they are told to either head to a regular doctor or they have to wait so long that they will leave. Why wouldn't this be done in cases like this?

If it wasn't Texas, I'd say my wife was one of the people.

Kidding but it seems like over the last 7 or 8 years, I've been to that dumb ER more than we should for all kinds of stupid stuff.

I don't even go to the doctor unless I think I might die...which is basically...never.

One of our best friends is a firefighter/paramedic here in Houston. This is quite common. They get 911 calls all the time, respond only to find that the person is complaining of a "stomach ache." They tell the person they can't take them in for that and suddenly it's, "oh and I'm feeling light headed, have a sharp pain in my shoulder, and am short of breath." So...they're required to take the person in. Botton line is these people know they can't be turned away and denied treatment at the ER and they have no insurance, so this is their way of receiving treatment for common ailments.

I'm an overnight pharmacist in central Phoenix, the abuse around here is unbelievable. No wonder there are 8 hour waits all the time.

and here it is I thought all these horrible illegals were the ones draining our medical system by using the ER as their primary care facility pumping out anchor babies.

At first, all I could envision was the old MASH episode where different Koreans keep showing up with the same ID card for treatment.

I go to the Dr. so infrequently, I have no PCP. I had one when I was still married. But when I was booted from the house, moved back home to my parents for a while, he was now 30 miles away. So now, as far as regular medical care, I do go to the same care clinic, but the Dr.'s rotate there.

The only Dr. I have that, is regular, is my shrink. He has agreed to be my medical point of contact, since he has my medical records. But as far as a family Dr., don't have one.
