    Default What are these things?

This is some sort of aero-boneyard off the Tucson airport - I've checked it out before, but I don't recall seeing these craft:

Looks like they're trying to build the starship Enterprise or something!

Possibly the old surveilance aircraft that the Navy used to use with the radome on top? Hawkeye, I believe they were called.

Those are retired Grumman E-2C Hawkeye aircraft. They were used by the US Navy and mostly were based on aircraft carriers. That large round thing is some type of a radar system or recon tracking device.

Maybe some relation? The disc on those at the boneyard seem to cover more of the fusilage than the one in the picture. Gotta be a helluva place to take an afternoon stroll, though.

    Thanks guys.

I do believe they were the precurser to the AWACS. The AWACS aircraft that was eventually developed had twin or four jet engines, depending on the missions duration, but the large radar remained the same. I remember a hell of a lot of talk about them in the mid to late '70s. They were quite the technological marvel back in the day, and if I recall correctly Egypt also had quite an interest in them.

I would love to go to a aircraft boneyard and kick some things around, but that's only because I FREAKIN LOVE AIRPLANES. There are several boneyards scattered across the country, for both Military and Commerical Aircraft. But, from what I've heard, gaining access to those areas is almost zilch.

That's it...AWACS! Wonder how that large dome changed the flight characteristics? Maybe a little more, "Drag" than normal?

Probably just the wood/other materials that they use to support a ship when it's in there.

If you look directly beyond the center screw in this pic, tou can see where the wood supports begin. Looking more forward, you can see where the supports begin on each side.

Here's a thought, the carrier the farthest to the right looks like it's being stripped by the look of it's clight deck, perhaps they are/were preparing it for that? Who knows when that pic was taken, so that may be a very old view. I know the google earth of my street is at least 4-5 years old.
