Check the tubes of course but if it turns out their fine, two things that come to mind. Firstly, try plugging and unplugging the efects loop jacks, and the, footswitch jack, and work the channel switches several times also. Very often a connection gets hung up. Sometime a little piece of debris from manufacture or daily use (ie: dirt on a guitar cable end) can interfere with the connection. This was a very common problem with the original 5150's in that the foot switch would some times not trip the channel fully and you'd lose alot of gain. Try a blast of airduster in the jacks as well. If it's not this then it could have a capacitor that's gone south. I had one fail in the first month. Lost most of the gain on the lead channel. Sometimes you just get a bum component. Works great at test, but after a while it just fails. It's usually just something in the foot switch. Good luck. Let us know how you make out.

It sounds like a preamp tube to me...

I would get some 12ax7 tubes and try swapping em one at a time to see if it helps...

Or bring it to a tech. I would do that since I dont know shit about servicing this amp.

    Good luck

Yeah! Maybe he's just using that shitty dipleateated uranium. Everyone knows you need weapons grade plutonium to produce the 1.21 Gigawatts to activate the Flux Capacitor! Can you still get that stuff from Lybia?

    Hey all,

Instead of starting a new thread I figured I'd use this to ask a question.

I know for a 5150 III half stack...if you were going to walk into a music shop that doesn't give great prices you could spend $2,500.00 on it or more?

Is $1,750.00 a great deal for a 5150 III black half stack new?

    Thanks

Cool. Yes the price seems right but I'm not sure if buying one second hand is worth the deal. I've heard the original tubes blow easy..that isn't an expensive fix..but I also hear some have bad channels and others the face plates and other parts rattle like crazy and only taking it back to the store for an exchange, for a better one solved it. They do have a 5 year warranty from Fender...this may be a dumb question but is the warranty honored when you buy it 2nd hand? A quick response would be helpful. thx.

I'm pretty sure I'm reading this correctly..
    Fender 5 Year Warranty

On Fender's site it says for them to honor the 5 year warranty the original owner/buyer must sign over ownership transfer to the new owner on the original receipt. So I'm kinda answering my own question lol for the benefit of anyone that might have also been curious about this.

I don't know about the warranty issues....

But the tube layout of the 5150 III is as follows:

Front row (looking at the front of the amp from left to right)
    V1 - Input tube for all 3 channels. V1A is for Ch 3, V1B for channels 1 & 2.
V2, V3 - preamp stages for channels 1 & 2 (channels are switched via relays)
V4, V5, V6 preamp stages for channel 3. V4 sets the high gain.

Back row (looking at the front of the amp from right to left)
    V7 - loop, V7A send a & V7B return
    V8 - Phase inverter
    V9-V12 - output stages.

Hopefully this'll help you narrow down/figure out if it's a bad preamp tube. If you're problems on channel 2 are from a bad or loose tube, I would think you'd have a similar problem on channel 1 as they share preamp tubes?

Thanks. You are a fountain of knowledge man. I'll remember this posting for future reference if I run into probs.

Checking Fenders site last night and calling them today to confirm it has answered my question. You need the original receipt.

I don't have the amp. It's not in the budget but I found a deal on one and was going to plastic it. Thing is though without the original receipt from a licensed Fender dealer the Warranty is void. I have read online that a lot of people have had problems with the early batch. Not just bad tubes but problems with the amp itself. It's worth the price if under warranty. I can just take it to a licensed repair center or send it in to get fixed/replaced for FREE. But if it's not covered I will end up paying close to full price 4 it (to buy it and then repair it) so that kinda negates the good deal(and urge to get it now). The dude says it works perfectly but there is no guarantee it wont bust in shipping or after having it a while.

This is unresolved at the moment but I plan to get at least the head by year end if this one doesn't work out. I had the chance to check one out and I love it. It's 1000x better than my 5150 sig head. Channel one is fender clean and bright..channel 2 is very plexi like which I love and channel 3 is high gain crazy with much less noise and buzz saw of the 5150 head. Perfect amp for me and fills my needs. Very quiet especially after being a 5150 1 user.

Just rambling now, as always lol Thanks for the info!
