An SUV is home for jobless duo

For the next few hours the two men drive the neon sign-lit Fort Lauderdale streets. There are very few places, they say, where they can stop and park without police chasing them off. Once in a while they pull into a local park for a couple hours until the lights on the fields are turned off and the gates closed. At least here, they're not wasting gas.

Every night is a challenge making it until 11 p.m., they say, when they can finally drive to their secret spot and bed down in the back of the old SUV.

I've known a couple of people who lost their jobs and then their apartments and ended up living out of their car. They both said it was easier than you'd think but that it still made them feel awful, embarrassed, ashamed etc.

The guy I knew would crash at a shelter each night. They gave him an address to use for job applications and such and he had voicemail there as well. That's where he took showers and whatnot.

The girl I knew lived out of her car and would shower at friends houses or truck stops.

Neither were homeless for too long. One thing about living out of your car, that's a rent check you save every month so as soon as they each got jobs, it was pretty easy to throw first month's rent and a deposit together.

It's a crappy situation and I hope I never find myself in that spot because it's got to be really traumatizing...not having a place to just go. you know what I mean?

That's what they said was the roughest part...just the psychology of not having a place to just sit down and be. They were always in a car, always dependent on food lines and libraries and shelters. Having to use public restrooms to brush their teeth and yeah, having to be very wary of cops busting them for loitering.
    Stay out of it, dude.

wow. that sucks. I pray to God that I'm never that down and out. I wish the best for them. That has to be an awful struggle.

I lived in a van for a couple of months. It was by choice though.
I used to jog but the ice cubes kept falling out of my glass.

And that is something that you and I would not even entertain doing in light of today's reality, either in Mexico or anyplace in the continental U.S. When we were younger, the idea of camping out in a van would be fairly cool for a short period of time and was a relatively safe proposition. Currently however, we'd need to sleep in shifts, one of us awake and standing guard. And if alone, the unlikely prospect of sleeping with one eye open would be a necessity. Times have changed, and most certainly not for the better.

Funny thing is when I did this I was in the same part of the country as a couple of serial killers who drove a white van, which I did also, and prayed on people camping or being lost in the wrong place at the wrong time. I don't remember their names but a few years ago I watched a documentary on them and was a little taken back. You are right though, I am not sure I would spend 8 days driving around in Mexico now. It really is a shame because it was a great experience that I would have encouraged my 2 sons to do after college.
