    California 159 years ago

Do you know what happened 159 years ago?

    California became a state.
    There was no electricity.
    The state had no money.
    Almost everyone spoke Spanish.
There were gunfights in the streets.

Still IS gold in them thar hills.

Good luck getting a permit to mine it with our state's progressive environmental laws. Even if you're going to use a pick & shovel it's a big deal to go into either a state or national forest to go prospecting.

In Nevada it's no problem, even dynamite is cheap.

Ha ha ha! That reminds me of something. Growing up, my dad and his friend bought a claim in California just several miles from where we lived (Barstow). Dad and I used to go out and pan for gold once in a while. We'd find a little - not very much - enough to put some nice padding in the pockets.

We eventually got the land assayed and they told us there was some gold there, but not too much. We kept the land anyway, figuring it might be worth more down the line.

One day, my dad's friend offered to buy out my dad's share. Eventually, Dad sold it for more than he paid for it. What we didn't know was that my dad's friend got another person to assay the land without our knowledge and this guy told him there was a lot of gold there. He tricked us, but he got it in the end: between environmental regulations and equipment costs, it would cost almost five times more than the value of that gold to get it out of the ground.
