    Default Wal-Mart to Open 2 Hispanic-Focused Supermarkets

Wal-Mart will open two supermarkets targeting Hispanic consumers in Arizona and Texas, the Financial Times reported.

Supermercado de Wal-Mart will open in remodeled retail spaces previously occupied by Wal-Mart's Neighborhood Market stores in Phoenix and Houston.

Wal-Mart said the stories will feature a "new layout, signing and product assortment designed to make them even more relevant to local Hispanic customers," according to the Financial Times.

Sam's Club, also owned by Wal-Mart, will open a Hispanic-targeted discount super warehouse called Mas Club in Houston later this year, the Financial Times reported.

The new stores coincide with a larger Wal-Mart theme of targeting a certain demographic, such as African-American, urban, suburban and Hispanic.

Last year a Wal-Mart Supercenter in Texas included a larger selection of Spanish-language DVDs and music, Hispanic foods and a tortilleria bakery, the Financial Times reported.

how much longer until we start seeing posts about how our country is being overtaken blah blah blah...

HEB did this Mi Tienda, I love them. There's nothing wrong with targeting a niche market and catering to a money spending sector of a community. I hope they open one close to me. The Mi Tiendas are on the other side of town, although both Kroger and HEB stores have extensive latin food sections.

Though, I'm curious what would happen if a big chain like this were to open a location targetting black consumers in an urban area?

Would sharpton show up and call it racial stereotyping? Would people cry racism because the store stocked chitlins and pigs feet and other staples of "soul food?"

I don't really see where this is any different in selling more winter coats in Minnesota than in Miami or more surfboards in Laguna Beach than in Kansas. I do have a problem with everything being in Espanol, but I'm afraid we're too far down that road to ever turn back anyway.

My biggest thing is do they need to corner the market for everything? Fuck, let someone else make money too.

This will probably work well. It's not like WalMart doesn't operate in other countries (including Hispanic markets) in much the same manner it does in the US: move in, and ruthlessly run everyone else out of business. Considering the chart below dates from 2006, things have presumably only gotten worse.

From what I understand from some folks down in South Florida, this sort of Wal-Mart already exists.

when I was a kid we would shop at Fiesta a fair amount of the time.

I like Fiesta a lot. Great store. Back then they didn't do a whole lot to attract non-hispanic shoppers so it was full on latin food, ingredients and vibe.

I remember seeing entire horse and pig heads in the freezer section!

Blew me away. Evidently they use it for stews and stuff.

So I keep thinking about the idea of HEB or Walmart or whoever coming out with a grocery store catering specifically to the african american community like they have with the latin food stores...when I first mentioned it I was pretty much joking around but the more I think about it, the more a few things come up for me.

    1. I do believe that if Walmart came out with african american stores there would be outrage. Community leaders and city councilpeople and sharpson (sharpton and jackson hardly merit individual reference anymore) would come out and say "how dare they try to exploit our community?! We are a rich and diverse people and a store like this promotes stereotypes and caricatures that we have worked so hard to destroy!!" They would go on to talk about how not all black people eat this or use that and that to imply that these are patently "black" products is a disservice to black people.

    2. No one says that about hispanics? Why? Because it's silly. It's not exploitative, it's good business. It's not steretyping, it's accurate assesments and observations of what we generally use for cooking, food prep, hygiene etc. I personally would love to see more of these culture specific shops. It's something that by and large has been the charge of local independent grocers and businessmen which is great. Houston has an awesome Jewish grocery store that I don't get enough opportunities to visit and I know that over off hilcroft and 59 there are some asian and middle eastern joints.

I wonder if there in would lie the rub for Sharpson...the fact that a "white" company was doing the selling instead of a "black company."

Do you guys think I'm way off on this? I might be overthinking this...I don't discount that.
